What did you do to your E28 today?
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Those seats look awesome. Where did you get them done?

This is how to turn a 535is into a 528e:
Engine to left, generic aftermarket CAT on right.
I finally got to drive the car some. My wife's Passat threw a timing belt prematurely, so I had to give her the E28. The increase in power is very noticeable.

Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Some baselining, and messing around with E30 parts to see what I might be able use.
I have an M30 MAF and/or AFM (Shawn?), and some 19# Bosch Ford injectors and a Sssquid chipped 173 DME sitting in a box; trying to decide if that's worth the effort.
Removed a half inch of slack in the throttle cable - response is a little nicer now.
Replaced these rusty trombone horns with some junkyard FIAMM trumpets - little louder and a bit higher pitch.
Wired up some Hella 500s to the OEM fog light plug - need to grab some bigger bullet fuses before/if I hook them up.
Looks like the PPO tried to wire his own fogs too - poorly done, as I pulled this eight foot piece of wire that was tucked in the balance. He had the end tapped into that little mini fuse box thing.
Also looks like PPO bypassed the electric/aux fan's built in switch. Wonder if this is related to the half melted aux fan fuse. I should look into that.

Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
The melted fuse for the cooling fan is common. Far as I can tell, the melt down is caused by 2 issues. Dirty fuse contacts is #1. #2 is dry bearings in the fan motor. The fuse contacts maybe too far gone. Quick and dirty fix is to buy a blade fuse pig tail; and a 25 A blade fuse. You will need to open the fuse box to cut and splice. The fan motor has a resistor for speed control and a diode to power the normal speed side when the AC is used. The fan is a left hand nut. The motor is hand assembled and comes apart readily. I repack the bearing and soak the bushing in light oil or ATF over night. If everything is good and greasy, the motor can run on an 8 amp fuse. The wedowhatzis in my sig is a link to the model specific E 28 wiring manual on PDF. Wanna buy a Bentley e 28 manual.? Good as the Bentley is , I think Rod Paine's site is better for some things. I'm breaking 3 528e super etas for parts. And there is South , a guy in Dayton OH. When I finish this post, I'm going to Fedex to ship a pair of axles .
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Changed the timing belt and water pump. Due to just getting the car and not knowing the last time it was done.
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Hey thanks for the info! The fan looks newer, (still a Siemens sticker that hasn't faded yet) - so I'm leaning toward the contacts. There's a few I need to clean so I'll do that too.a wrote:The melted fuse for the cooling fan is common. Far as I can tell, the melt down is caused by 2 issues. Replaced some broken or missing pieces with fresh junkyard parts:
Glovebox latch, Ashtray, Seatbelt Receptacle, Drivers Side Headlight Cover, stuff like that.

Last night I ran the ol' bugger into a workbench due to starting it in gear by accident Thank God the bulk of the damage was an easy fix.
Do these cars have a clutch stop switch that was bypassed on mine? I'm used to starting it without pushing in the clutch

Nope. Up to the operator.Beemernut wrote:Last night I ran the ol' bugger into a workbench due to starting it in gear by accident Thank God the bulk of the damage was an easy fix.

I am in process of removing and replacing my steering box, almost got it out last night.
I replaced my clutch master and am also in process of replacing the brake booster with a rebuilt unit.
Trying to degrease as much as possible down there because it was a horrible mess due to leaking ATF for the last few years (during the winter).
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
I pulled it out of storage yesterday & took it out for a romp. I missed it.
Next up, new (to me) springs & shocks/struts, MHE UCABs, valve adjustment, oil pan repair, etc...

Wash, detail, and oil change. Pendleton is a happy car!

Noice! Such clean lines; photo is making me consider removing the roof rack I just put on.Pendleton wrote:Wash, detail, and oil change. Pendleton is a happy car!
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Thanks, yeah, I have a roof rack but I think it looks better without. I only put it on when I need to use it for something: http://www.mye28.com/viewtopic.php?f=2& ... 5#p1430281
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
I looked at it. I thought about driving it. Decided it was too much work.
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Korman rebuilt diff, swapped to S3.46 went in.
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
In the process of putting cargo net assemblies from E36 seats on the backs of my 1984 528e comfort seats. Had to paint the brackets tan to match my interior. I would call the car, "de-contented", a bare bones model when I bought it. I've had fun sourcing and adding various OEM bits, such as arm rests and front tweeters. One of the things that attracted me to the car when I bought it was the fact that it has manual adjusting seats, no motors or switches to break.

Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Washed, Aerospaced the dash, Rain-Xed the windshield and got my tires all greasy
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Saturday: Finished troubleshooting the Audio System (FINALLY) which was supposed to a Head Unit upgrade and turned into a total dismantlement of the entire amp board.
Sunday: Starting prepping for the first Clean Car Contest (San Diego BMWCCA Jack Cavanaugh Clean Car Contest) next month: Lower Body and Wheels:
Started with the wheels & tires, lower rockers and side skirts, rear valance and bumper, wheel wells and fender lips, and a general under-carriage wipe-down.
Finished result, after 4 buckets of black water (and this was already a "clean" car):
This continues next weekend with the Engine Bay, following week is the Interior.
Trying to best last year's Super Clean 2nd Place.

Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Refurbed my windshield washer system with new heated nozzles, hoses, valves, and crimp clamps.
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Name that e28 repair issue.
As you can see, I dove into replacing the front struts.

Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Cleaning and baselining a 1987 535i that I purchased last weekend.
Wash + Clay
Klasse All-In-One, Klasse Sealant Glaze
Vacuum
Lexol Cleaner, Lexol Conditioner
Spark plug change (Bosch WR9LS Silver)
Air filter (Mann C 26)
Oil filter (Mahle OX 41D)
Go to remove the plug to drain the oil, thread sealant gunk everywhere. Somebody “repaired” a badly stripped plug. I hope it’s the plug, and not the pan… the plug is not OEM so I’m hoping I have a shot at an easy fix
About the car…
~113k miles
Blue on blue (Cirrus metallic / Pacific)
Automatic transmission (my first car with, not my preference but it will have its place given the traffic around here)

I only learned that our pissers are heated the other day when I removed one of mine to de-clog it. Apparently, something got into the tank, and it totally blocked up my drivers side nozzle.glowell222 wrote:Refurbed my windshield washer system with new heated nozzles, hoses, valves, and crimp clamps.
Of course, I got it all de-clogged and working well, and was quite pleased with myself. ...Until today when I went to use the system to de-pollen the windshield and the passenger-side one totally clogged itself up.
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Not today, but Friday night I buttoned up the front end to make it driveable for the weekend.
I had been on the hunt for a set of new shocks for the front end since the old ones were pretty much shot, but after shopping and asking around for months was still unable to find any. Then I happened upon a post on the Facebook BMW e28 Group advertising a set of Bilstein Sports & Spax lowering springs for a totally doable price; a couple messages and a PayPal transaction later, and they were mine. I tore down the front end over the last week or so, cleaned things up, and got it put back together. Drove it around a bit yesterday, including a cars & coffee-style event, then used it for some errands again today, and realized now that I haven't even taken a photo of it to show off the new low. On my to-do list.

Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Spent the weekend knocking out a list of things that I've wanted to do, and needed to be done before Vintage. Hooked up with Jay Stratton on a rebuilt brake booster to replace my leaky one. Great transaction by the way. So I got that installed, and then I tackled the car's suspension. New upper and lower control arms, new steering swivel joint, and new dog bones. I also installed 4 new rotors and all new brakes. Car is feeling pretty tip top.
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Mounted a set style 29's from an E39. Wheels came with a good set of tires, 225 55 R 16's. I trimmed the rear wheel wells as advised in the excellent wheel and tire FAQ on this site. Was worried that the tires might be too tall to get along well with the front struts. Seem to fit fine, however.
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Not today, but yesterday I finished the post-mortem on the engine from my old 528e. This is what I saw when the head came off; not pretty.
My eldest son bought the car from me when we left for Germany ~3 years ago, and was using it as his daily driver until last fall when it died. He pulled the old motor out soon after and started swapping in an M50. Since then the motor had been sitting in his mother-in-law's garage, and she wanted it gone, so he asked me for help in getting it to the scrapper. I wanted to steal a few bits off of it, and also thought it'd be fun to tear it down to see what actually caused its demise. He thought the timing belt went, but as it turned out, the camshaft appears to have seized on it. The belt was intact, but the camshaft will not turn, but the pulley on the end of the camshaft is able to spin freely.
When I adjusted valves a while back, there was a lot of dark gunk under the VC. There wasn't a lot to be done with it, short of pulling the head and dipping it, so I pretty much left it as I found it. I ran some Seafoam through it prior to a couple of oil changes too, but hadn't looked under the VC to see if it had helped. I guess the oil passages were pretty gunked up as well, and continued to collect crap. And it led to this.

Left them sitting at the house awaiting Vintage trek.
