Holset Hx40 T4 housing?

Post by Bigdoug92 »

So i picked up a Holset Hx40w for cheap over the weekend and it came with the stock gated T3 housing. The problem is i have T4 manifold and in some research i cant seem to find anything on what T4 housing people are running with their Hx40. I have seen some people machine other T4 housing to fit but i would like to avoid that if possible. I suppose i could also cut off the T4 flange and weld on a T3? Any guidance is appreciated.

Here's an interesting T3 manifold, although typically m30's are T4.

I do have a Mosselman/Korman manifold for T3, but they are rare and very difficult to find. I've imagined that an internally gated unit would be easier in terms of downpipe, but most T3 turbo's on the small side for M30's.

depending how much your into the turbo for, i would look into getting an aftermarket t4 housing.

This would give your a higher A/R which should work better for your m30. Additionally, i think the vband on the hx40(in know my hx35 was) is not a standard size, another big plus is it would eliminate the internal waste gate and give you a smaller hotside(the non wastegate version makes packaging easier in the engine bay)

the complete turbo he bought was probably $100 cheaper then that housing alone. :)

Ive looked at the aftermarket stuff but like shadow said the aftermarket ones are 3x what i paid for the turbo lol The adapter would be a quick and dirty way to get it on there but i would still rather have a non gated housing at some point if i can pony up spending that on a housing

Is a 22cm housing way to big? Found a semi cheap one but dont want it to be an absolute lag monster.

Not sure what size the housing sizes are for HX40, but this was my list for turbo's sized for 3.4L M30.
Brand..................Turbo...............CmpInd.....CmpExd.....TrbInd.....TrbExd.....Flow(lb/min)

BorgWarner.......EFR 7163....................57..............71..............63......N/A.........60
Garrett............GT 3582R...................61.4............82...........68..........62.2.......60
Holset............HX40 - 6 blade...............56..............86...........76..........65..........60

Holset............HX40 - 8 blade...............60..............83...........76.........65...........62
Holset.............HX40 - 7 blade..............60..............86...........76..........65..........62
BorgWarner.......EFR 7670....................57.2...........76............70...........62..........64
Garrett............GTX 3076R..................58.............76.6..........60..........54.9........64

BorgWarner.......S257SXE....................57.15...........76.2.........70...........61..........65
CompT.............TCD 60/P Trim..............58............74.9.........74.2.........64.6.........? *Garrett 60 wheel

BorgWarner.......BW 8375-S360...............60..............83.........75.9..........68..........68
The housing is a fine tuning adjustment for either more response, or more overall flow (but some lag).
Larger A/R reduces exhaust velocity and turbine rpm.
Takes more exhaust to make boost; from larger engine or higher rpm.

Turbine housings are sized for various displacements\flow rates, but the A/R in each size allows fine-tuning to desired output.

If you don't mind me asking, what turbo set up are you running?
