Felt door trim/seal

So, I have made as many repairs as I can on the felt window /door trim as I can. The current state of appearance bugs me and I want to replace it. Part 51 72 1 904 328. I have found it listed for sick money. I am sure someone here has found either an alternate item or a better source.

Any suggestions?

I wish I knew. I just glued mine back in place but I'm sure it was come aloose again.... Also do you know how to obtain the hard rubber pieces that go inside the window frame? I'm missing one of the ones that goes in the corner by the tweeter after a pick and pull replaced my driver's window after a break-in. Good luck.

I was thinking that junkyard felt from an E38 would be worth a shot. Cut it down and hide the seam under the door sill trim. That was my intention to try. I have maybe 2 good sets of trims at home so I'm not in a rush but I did forget to bring a trim piece home from the yard the other month. Doh!

I just removed all the felt from my car. Looks better then sagging felt everywhere.

Seattle Guy, you need the inner door rubber. It's one piece. A yard car without damaged inner door window guide rubber would be good or buy new. You can find part numbers on realoem. Best

The seals are the same diagonally. RF/LR, LF/RR.

I haven't bought any myself, so I can't recommend any vendor.

It uses a flock layer (or is the rubber flocked directly?) and looks very tidy.

What we really need is this "windlace" fabric ( 1/2 woven, 1/2 plush)...



...but glued to a door seal instead of a rubber tube.
The materials exist, but the E28 combination doesn't seem to be readily available.

Black 3M weather strip adhesive is the best stuff I've found for gluing loose fir back in place.

Use less than you think you'll need.

Apply to both (clean) surfaces.

Let dry a bit.

Use clips to hold in place while it sets.

Do it on the car if not completely disconnected.

I too want to know if this aftermarket stuff is workable....

It turned out great, not quite exact copy but close enough, the fur part goes all the way round so no cloth part. Fine by me.

You would have to 90 degree the corners of course but not an issue.

Well made quality seal with aluminum core like original.

This looks great. My felt pieces are starting to really detach. How much do you think you’ll need for the whole car?

I calculated 11 metres total for all 4 doors which gives a few CM spare. Plan on cutting at 45 degrees and gluing in place for the top rear corner. It will look like the factory one.

If you are not sure than an extra metre is not going to break the bank.

I have ordered 11 meters of this seal from Germany through a friend who visits there often. They do not ship outside Germany.

M5 running great, got the AC fan working now so just need to find the R12 leak before filling with R12 again.

Washer jets a pain, blocked up again. Pain to remove and clean for sure. Any suggestions? Using the blue summer washer fluid from WalMart.

I don't drive the car enough.. It does not like sitting in the garage for sure. Passed CA emissions again with flying colors, tester could not believe the numbers for a 1988 car!

First step was to see how the short corners could be made to work. It took several attempts and I finally settled on this: Two 45 degree cuts using some Swis shears. Kohler suggested cutoff wheel might work even better. I'll try that for the right side.



I did the driver's door first:






Then the left passenger door.


I'm extremely happy with this stuff. There's a very small risk of water ingress at the corners where the cuts are needed, but if the door seal is in good shape, this should not be an issue. Some gasket maker, carefully applied might seal it up, but I'm not doing that here unless I know I have to.

This stuff is a bit bulkier than the OE stuff. The doors close fine, but you can tell its a little tighter. The B pillar covers fit on tight.

That rear seat fitment just looks terrific.
