Greetings from Ohio

Post by dsmith »

Just thought I would say hi, since I got another e28 BMW and this site wasn’t around when I owned before.

I’ve been a long time BMW owner and general car addict. I’ve owned pretty much one of everything from a 1984 318i to a 911 race car. With the proliferation of CAN BUS technology, which pretty much makes DIY next to impossible and cost prohibitive, I’ve decided to backtrack to the cars I’ve liked best, ‘80s BMWs.

Not being too picky on colors and options, I still had a list of wants. Due to family needs, I pretty much ruled out an e30 focusing on e28 and e23 cars. Given a choice, I wanted white with cardinal interior, manual trans and an eta motor for fuel economy. I also wanted “is” spoilers on an e28, manual sport seats from an e30 and an M-sport steering wheel. I am budgeting about $10k for a car to make the next 5 years.

The biggest hurdle was finding a completely rust free chassis.
So, after following up on most of the e28’s available the past couple months, I swore that I would probably end up with an M5 again and swap in an eta motor. On a whim, I happened upon an ebay car in Phoenix previously owned by a couple of forum members, 5280 JB and alpinamotorsport. After some research, I set my price and won the bid.

It’s a 1988 528e automatic, white on cardinal with “is” spoilers. I had a 370mm Mtech 1 wheel that I put in and I have e30 sport seats to recover and install. Later, I will get another 88 528e manual for a winter car and do a manual swap.
The car made the 2000 mile drive from Phoenix to Ohio without issue. There were barely any clouds in the sky, no rain/sleet/snow and in the 60’s the whole way. On either side of my drive were tornados and inches of snow.

All I can say is that it’s been 12 years since I owned an e28 and man does it feel old compared to my 1999 E320, but it handles like a go kart and that’s what I missed.

Cosmetically, it needs very little. Basically, just a refinish of the airdam. Mechanically, it just needs guibo, center bearing and rear bushings. Everything works as it should. Overall, I’m extremely happy with the condition of the car, and would have been happy to find one in this condition and mileage (140k) 10 years ago.

Big thanks to Jim, Mark and Dan (prior owner) for keeping it in such great condition. Hopefully, it will remain as such.

That's kind of funny, since I spent the last 14 yrs in NW Houston and was involved in every motorsport in TX. Also was very active with BMWCCA and instructed for most of the HPDE and track day events at TWS and MSR. Used to give lots of money to Mike Perkins before working on my own cars.

I still go down for Lemons events and work 2-3 times a year. I lived in Copperfield. I also try to race a couple of Rally America events each year and help start RallyCross in TX back in 2000.

My friend James bought some wheels from you for his beater e28 and told me about your BMW garden. Wish I still lived there, but family dictated a move back to the frozen tundra.

Welcome from Columbus, OH! Also hit up OhioBimmers.com if you want more local stuff. But if you're serious about the vintage BMW metal head down to Winston-Salem on Memorial Day weekend for The Vintage. And don't miss out on O'fest this year either because its in our backyard.

We have a few members here from Ohio. Cactus is in Dayton with south26, the guy with the baseball pics in his sig just moved to Cleveland, and Tim Wing is also up there. Welcome to the madness!

I did start looking at ohiobimmers.com, so I'll become active. I'm planning on Ofest. I was going to wait another couple of years, but having Ofest here gave me a push to get another BMW this year.

See y'all soon.

So happy to see this car go to an enthusiast owner! I hope it gives David many years of enjoyment as it did for me.

Keep us posted on your progress with mods and such. Can't wait to see it wearing some different wheels - the bottlecaps just don't do the car justice.

Jim

T-Stars again? Style 32's? Hmmm.......so many choices :D

Welcome, and congrats on your perseverance in finding an e28 :) It a familiar story to hear of folks coming back to the 80's and particularly the e28. :)

Also, glad you found your eta, because if this would have happened, "I swore that I would probably end up with an M5 again and swap in an eta motor", it would have been total sacrilege!!

Indeed. Glad you found your car, and welcome to MyE28 with your E28. Those post-purchase road trips home are wonderful! See you at the BMW paddock.

Welcome aboard and great to see a really nice 528e! Far too many aren't in very good condition, unfortunately. Tomorrow (April) I will have owned mine for 29 years since purchasing it new, April 1983. It has been and continues to be a great vehicle, especially after making some selected modifications over the years.
Good to see your 528e here.

Although you're a couple of hours away, my old pals in the Northern Ohio Chapter are a great bunch. I'm hoping to make O'Fest (was on the committee the last time it was in Cowtown) and I'll hook you up.

Well, 8 years later and I purchased this car again! I sold it 4 years ago to someone who had it garaged and maintained and put 5000 leisure miles on it. Still runs great and ac works great.

So cool! I found it weird getting in Uglina (78 FJ40) 6 years after I sold it (~6000 miles). I poured so much energy into that rig fixing it up and thus knew every detail so well. It was weird seeing it all the same, just with slightly more patina.

Made it home 800 miles yesterday without issue. I took the fogs out for the trip and install plastic blanks I made. Changed the oil this morning and washed it, before sticking it in the storage unit.

I swapped stock springs and shocks on for the last sale at the request of the buyer. It was a pleasant change from the harshness of Billie sports and H&Rs.

Yes, from an e34. I bought them from Sherman on my first visit to the Bimmer Garten. Future plan will be Borbet type C 16”, also purchased from Sherman.

Right now I just refurbished a set of manual sport seat rails and pulled out all of my parts for an auto to manual swap. Also added an mtech1 wheel. Not sure on suspension, but I do have a set of mtech springs and fixed camber plates. Might go a little mild on this one. I have an S3.46 to put in as it has the stock non-lsd 3.46 right now.

Basically, I have a lot of parts that needed the right car for a home!
