HX35 for my M30B35?

Post by iamcreepingdeath »

Calling all turbo gurus...

I am looking for guidance for a good turbo for my M30B35 swapped E28. My power goal is at least 400hp, but the more, the merrier, of course! I have read that Holset HX40 turbos from the Cummins are great, but I have a line on an HX35 for a good price, and I have read that those are also excellent, however some people have reported that it is too small for an M30B35.

What would be your recommendations? Hold out for an HX40? Go with the HX35? Modify the HX35 with external wastegate and different turbine housing? Go with something else altogether?

Thanks all!

I'm pretty happy with my ebay gt35 turbo. I have a thread below. I started with a t4, a/r.82, super laggy! Then, I tried a t3, a/r .68, much better! I don't have any experience with the holsets.

the hx35 is very hard to beat for the money, i had one on a b35 and loved it. Only mod you really need to do it make a new rear flange for a standard vband and to block the internal wastegate. I think they sel kits but i made my own

It seems like there are HX35s everywhere for dirt cheap, so I may go that route...

I want to bump this thread again, trying to gather more real-world experiences to help guide me. Anyone running an HX35? HX40? 50? 55?

Thanks

Bumping this thread again, any HX35 flavor in particular I should look for? There seems to be 7 vane and 8 vane compressor versions. Are they all the same size? I would be getting another hot side housing that has a V-band interface and doesn't have an internal wastegate. Apparently they come in different A/R sizes. What size should I get?

Thanks

Can you give me more details about your HX35 M30B35? How much power did you make? Did you run megasquirt? What kind of HX35 did you use?

If you plan on going boosted, it’s a no brainer to go megasquirt. There’s so many advantages and safety provisions available on megasquirt that’ll (hopefully) keep you from over boosting or running too lean. Preignition too. Protect your investment and plan on running megasquirt.

I was on the fence about it for a while but after looking into it, megasquirt is really the only way to do it as these cars get older. Vortec is the only one making a rrfpr that I know of that can let you run fuel pressure in boost. That’s $300, for $500 more you can get PnP megasquirt and run a MAF, ignition coils, and have the added bonus of safety.

Maybe you posted in the wrong thread? This thread is about turbo options for the M30.

My bad I ain't trying to be smart, I didn't connect you to your previous post for some reason, and I genuinely thought you were just posting in the wrong thread by accident...

That said, I am running MS2, and I have since picked up a used HX35 and rebuilt it, we'll see how she runs!
