What clutch kit are people using on a stock M5?

Post by Etip »

Hi.
Pulling the motor in a bit and going to replace the clutch, pressure plate, and throw out.
What are people putting in?
I see what looks like a pretty reasonable Sachs kit online.
Where are people buy from also?

Lastly, I see some lightweight flywheels offered. Do these give a tangible benefit for the cost, with a stock car?

Thanks for any input. This car is new to me so still learning e28/M5 stuff.

I installed the Sachs clutch kit, p/n 21212226428 in my '87 M6 with no issues.

As for the flywheel - I kept the stock one so I cannot comment.

I have a lightweight flywheel on my m50 (purchased from RHD engineering), very high quality product but I haven't gotten much chance to drive on it yet. I have a similar flywheel on my Honda and it really improved throttle response without introducing any noticeable problems.

Thanks Galahad.
When I looked on RHD's website, it's only $275?
That seems really reasonable for quicker throttle response.
Does it have similar drivability at parking lot speeds or does it get grabby/lurchy?

Thanks for the recommendation.

I don't have any issues at low speeds with the RHD one or the 9lb one in my Honda - you should get a sprung clutch disk because it's a single mass flywheel tho.

The M5 already has a 14 lbs flywheel.

What he said.
I would not change to lighter.
One great thing about the S38 is the ability to leave a light on level ground without hardly stepping on the throttle.
With a lighter one this will be much more difficult.
My suggestion is to stick with the stock one.
