Starter upgrade

Is it worthwhile to upgrade the M5 starter to a B35(1.7KW) or M70(2.2KW) starter. I am about to replace the starter on my M5.

The gear reduction B35 starter is smaller, lighter and sounds like it cranks with more energy IMO. I don't have it in my M6 (still original) but put one in my 535 and it's also a lot easier to install.

i put a B35 starter in my M5, when i had the engine out, a few years ago. i opted to install studs in the block, to make future replacement easier. worked great for me, on both accounts.

when you install studs, make sure the transmission is already bolted to the engine. if you don't do it this way, you run the risk of installing the stud too far in the block and the corresponding bell housing bolt won't have enough threads available to be tightened properly. use red loctite on the end of the stud so it doesn't come out later. good luck!

you would order parts for an M30B35 equipped car, so tell the catalogue you want a starter for a 1989-1993 535i.

Yes I did the B35 upgrade. It was much easier to install than the old one. Cranks fast . It will be a whole easier with the motor out.

Its Bosch SR441X for the part number.

Thanks guys. I just ordered. Paid a few bucks extra for Amazon but no core to return and will be here in a couple days.
I'll be sure to have it bemce tested before install.
