So after reading for a year and a half, and having my discs warped twice in one year and re skimmed I have decided on the following upgrade.... But there are problems
Front
E31 (US model, after 8/93)
Roters 324mm x 30mm thick rotors.
Caliper Part #: 34 11 1 161 177/178, non available second hand, so will be new at 500 euros each
Rotors Part #: 34 11 1 161 086 (superseded by 34 11 6 756 087)
No Carriers necessary as I understand it and its just a plug and play.
Rear
E34 vented (US model 540i/M5/540i Sport)
The calipers are single piston. To be used with 300mm diameter x 20mm thick vented rotors
Caliper Part #: 34 21 1 159 657/658 (superseded by 34 21 1 160 399/400), IM possible to find reasonably, but ffound some ATE ones...
Rotor Part #: 34 21 1 165 265
Carrier Part #: 34 21 1 160 384 ( these are difficult to find but BMW sells them at 400 euro EACH...
? Goodeidge b rake line, or similar,
Pads, ECB?
I am going to try to set this up if I find the calibers, and then see how it all works, will I need a 750 master cylinder..
So far I have only been able to find the rear calipers, the carriers are far too expensive and looks like I WILL BE GOING TO THE DEALER FOR THE FRONT CALIPERS.
Any one who has any of these for sale I would be grateful, and any ideas or anything I have missed out on would also be appreciated.
Thanks
E28 M5 Brake upgrade
Re: E28 M5 Brake upgrade
Highly doubt the '93+ front 4 pot calipers are still available new but you may have a better chance to find them used. Great brakes (limited performance pads though) but again hard to find. Your choice for the rear is spot on and readily available.
Look into the e34 M5 front calipers,, single piston 315mm vented rotors, really overkill for a street car but also readily available and not terribly expensive.
Stainless brake lines are a nice addition to firm up the pedal feel. 750 brake booster really not needed, I'm running the e31 4 pot/540 rear setup on a stock e28 master cylinder and really don't have any issues.
Do a search here on a "big brake kit and you'll get many many pages on what your options would/can be.

Yes I have been through a lot of these discussion,
The E34 M5 is even more difficult to find, I have found a pair on ebay, for around 600, but without carriers which are not available anywhere that I can see. If you know where I can find the calipers and carriers please let me know.
Even if available now days the carriers cost the same as the calipers.
The E31 front calipers apparently fit onto the e28 m5 carrier... For the moment I can not find any reasonably priced carriers for the rear E34 calipers that I have...
