Hello
I would need advice I have 1985 M88/3 complete with transmission ,headers, wiring, etc. motor has 117770km on it.
What would be the value? Thank you
complete M88/3 value?
Re: complete M88/3 value?
With the prices of S14 engines these days you would think a M88 or S38 would be right up there. The reality is they are very expensive to rebuild. There is not a large number of people that want to use them in cars they were not originally installed in (there are a ton of 2002 owners that want to put a S14 in their cars). This keeps the number of people bidding on these engines rather low. Someone that NEEDS one for their M5 or M6 is probably willing to spend a lot more for one than someone thinking about putting it in a E9 or E3.
That said I would guess the engine and gearbox complete should be worth $5-6000. That price might go up if you have some idea of the condition of the engine (compression and lead down tests, service history etc) The Getrag 180 gearboxes have a history of worn shift forks and noisy bearings with a lack of available parts and people that know how to rebuild them that would be a shot in the dark unless you put it in a car and see how it drives first.

Re: complete M88/3 value?
I paid $15k for a rebuilt M88 engine in 2022, purchased from a BMW restorer just outside of Austin, TX. It came with the full EFI harness, AFM, Airbox, ECU. It was removed from a running E9.
It was more than I was wanting to spend, but with the rarity, to be expected.
