E23 cluster connectors

Post by JonF »

I recently pulled my cluster to replace the SI batteries. I’m done, and went back to install the cluster and found 2 small connectors that don’t appear to go anywhere.

Any idea what these are for? Both are brown with red stripe wires.

probably go to some feature your car does not have since you made very careful notes on exactly what you disconnected to remove the cluster and took pictures.

These 5&7 cars have a number of wires in the dash that are not connected.

Not 100% sure on e23 but on e28 is:

This connector is used by control cruise:

And it goes here (BLAU position)

And be aware of the orientation of that Blau wire, it is correctly shown in the picture, but it goes in the opposite of what it looks like it should, at least to my eyes.

That connector is similar to the one for cruise. The ETM shows the cruise colors as Blue/Brown and Brown and on both the E28 and E23 there are two wires in the connector that goes to the speedo. I expect it is a different L-shaped connector, there are a few of them in the E28, don't recall how many my E23 has that are not connected. Also don't remember the color codes of the wires on the cc-speedo wire connector.

I know I'm not the expert on this wiring issues but look this post about a question on cluster (cruise control) wiring. According this, there are two different connector depending on auto trans or "standard" (Manual??), auto trans is single wire and "standard" trans is two wires....both brown/red wires.

you may be right, the op shows a two-pedal car. I don't know anything about those autotrannyjobs.

I found the cruise connector under a black cover on the back of the cluster. It only has 1 wire, and my car is an automatic.

I left the barrel jack style connector unconnected.

The cluster work completely and cruise control also works.

Thanks guys!
