Inflatable paint booths

Post by BimmerDan »

Hello everyone,
I've given up on matching my 533's paint, everyone that has tried to match it has given me a very white 146 paint. I don't know if this is due to Alpinewiess changing during production or the paint changing due to age. I've decided to paint the whole car and be done with it. I've been looking at inflatable paint booths and am about ready to pull the trigger. https://www.vevor.com/inflatable-paint- ... 0693190050

Does anyone here have experience with them or have any input on the brands?

Thank you all

I don't recall the color code, but my '85 had distinctly yellow Alpine white paint. The hood however was not original, but didn't appear to have been repainted and was somewhat whiter, less yellow. But as of now they all seem to be yellow. At Eric's Renofest a couple of years ago a guy and I were talking about white and I pointed out a car and said, look at that one, it's been repainted. He was shocked and it turned out it was his. He asked how I could tell and I said by color, his was whiter. He wanted proof, we walked over and I showed him the paint line by the windshield.

But on inflatable spray booths. I would go for custom tinted paint first, but if you do go for a booth here are my thoughts. 23x13 may sound big, but having painted a couple myself, not particularly well I might add, it sounds small to me. 26x15 is the smallest I would even consider. You need some elbow room in there, you've got the gun, the hose, you behind the gun and the hose, you need room to work and not drag the hose over wet paint.

Then in an enclosed space like that you want a really good respirator, if not a supplied air respirator. There's nasty stuff in auto paint, IIRC cyanide in the hardener. IMO in a very enclosed space like the inflatable booth you're talking about a good half or full face respirator, even with good charcoal cartridges, is marginal at best. Hate to sound like an old lady or your mother, but this is dangerous stuff, be overly cautious.

Mike, thats my exact issue. The lemon is missing from 146 according to every source I can find.

I can paint, but tinting is a little out of my skill level. Thanks for the advice on the booth! I was worried about the size as well. As for the health stuff I understand, I just completed my third sinus surgery and my wife is a RT, there is no shortage of the respirator talk here.

Oooh, that's way off. Maybe not perfect, but I would think you could get someone to tint it to match. They do that stuff all the time. Or at least they used to.

I’ve tried ten places and they don’t want to do anything other than what the computer says.
I’ve tried a few body shops but unless they do the work they have been unwilling to talk. The old timers are few and far between anymore.

I may need to go to Omaha or Lincoln and try. Also maybe need to clamber the car and polish it, maybe there is more dirt in the paint than I realize. The car has sat in the garage for 5 years waiting for paint.

Are you painting single stage DIY then?

Thinking of doing this myself but am worried about how durable it will be and which paint brand to go with...

Yes. This is a chinese company, it is basically TEMU. There's many problems with it, the company's name, adress, mother company etc is changing yearly. They are breaking a ton of laws, but so far they could not "catch them".
From a user perspective, they are actually relatively trust-able and sell everything from useless shit to actually good-ish quality. Good enough for a hobby use, at least.

I cannot however comment on the booth itself. I've seen and heard of them before, so I guess it's a thing. You can buy these from aliexpress, I would order from there. I've been buying chinese crap from them for 8 years and every time I had an issue, I had a full refund within 24hrs.

Hope this helps.

My 2 cents: If you go to Glasurit Color Online and search for 146 Alpinweiss, the system will offer the Std color plus 3 or 4 variants. One of them is Yellow. There you can get the mixing ratios for their paints, and maybe a conversion code.
Their Standard basecoat is the 55 line, then there are others like water based, etc.

I switched to a browser named "Brave" and it's awesome. It's essentially Google Chrome with a very decent adblocker and cookie deleter in it. It also runs faster and uses less data.

Sorry for the off

I ended up just doing it in my garage, and it turned out okay minus my HF gun coming with the wrong nozzle. I got the paint from paint scratch.com. They matched my fuel door, it wasn’t great paint but my car is going to be together and one color for the first time in 6 years.
