Rust repair-front door hinges

Post by SD-KC »

A cheap 535is has come up for sale locally. Problem is it has pretty significant rust in the front door hinges and lower quarter. This to me seems like terminal rust. Anyone ever repaired rust in those places?

Nothing more expensive nowadays than a cheap e28... if the rust is that bad, there's probably more you can't see. Maybe look at it as a parts car and look for a better platform to swap parts into but there's lots to consider. Rust repair is very expensive unless you are able to do the work yourself.

Is the rust in the hinges themselves, or in the body where the hinges attach? It seems like an unusual rust spot for an e28, I'm thinking if it's that bad there's probably other major rust elsewhere.

Mine is rusted in the door post between the hinges, rather than the hinges themselves. To echo others, if it’s rusty there, the floors and sills can’t be unscathed. Rust repair isn’t that fun, and absorbs an enormous amount of time.
