WYSIWYG Editor Discussions

Post by tig »

I am running a test of a potential new MyE28 Post Editor. It may or may not work well. GIve it a try. If it works well and people like it we'll leave it enabled. Otherwise we'll keep working.

Note: You can't use the editor to direclty enter Image Links (img tag).

Image linking is now working. Use the Image button:

What is NOT working is dragging & dropping an image.

Weird.  After all these years I've gotten pretty comfortable with the bracketing, especially where interjecting a bunch of different comments after a block of text, like answer one question, then the quoted text, then answer the next.  I've done that half a dozen times in a single post before.  I'm not sure how to do that now, although I haven't really looked.

I'm so used to it I'll use it on other sites where it doesn't show that formatting working, but it does.

When working with a quoted post, I've had it add extra line breaks and justify code. Also more than once, after hitting preview, the post appears correct up above, but everything I had written was gone in the WYSIWYG editing box.

If you really hate the new WYSIWYG editor, I've just implemented a feature that lets you turn it off.

Got to your User Control Panel (UCP): ucp.php?i=ucp_profile&mode=profile_info

And check the checkbox, then hit Submit:

For now, I ask you to NOT DO THIS. Continue to use it and provide feedback. Thanks.

Hi!

I'll try to rerpo & debug this. Thanks for the report.

Note the Smilies toolbar button now inserts Emojies not the old smilies.

Smilies: 💩?
Emojis: 👍?

Is this an upgrade or downgrade?

Oh yeah.
The table option is AWESOME.
I'll update the M30 build specs post later with it!

Oh, okey, now I see.

So I tried the new picture function, CTRL C - CTRL V doesn't seem to work.

The second bug I found is, that when I tried to edit an older post on my thread, the editor only loads up roughly 30% of the post - the rest is just gone, and I cannot edit it?

Multiple posts, but for example, the first post on my build thread does it.

Yep. I can reproduce it.
I recommend you turn off the wysiwyg mode for now as I debug. You can do it in your UCP.

@szacsi72,

Your post had an extra "[/i]" in it. This was causing the editor to fail.

I will continue to try to see if I can make the editor more robust, but in the meantime, I manually edited your post to remove that extra markup and the wysiwyg editor is now working fine on it.

If you have other posts where this happens, please:

1) Turn off WYSIWYG in your UCP.
2) Edit the post to find/fix any invalid markup (e.g. unbalanced tags).
3) Turn WYSIWYG back on.
4) Verify that the editor does the right thing.

For anywhere you still can't get it to work, please post a link to that post here in this thread.

I've added some code that at least shows an error message when a post has malformed BBCode in it and you try to edit it.

Like if you try to quote the message above:

I'll continue to make this better as I have time, but for now this should be super helpful. No?

I've added a checkbox to the posting page that lets users switch between the built-in Source editor and the WYSIWYG editor.

The WYSIWYG editor is enabled by default on a per-user basis.
This can be changed in the User Control Panel. If this is turned off the default will be to use the Source editor.

On a per-post basis, users can override how they have UCP set with the checkbox at the bottom of the editor.
