275whp is awsome. The factory under-rated the power. This will be a tuners dream machine. Cant wait for Dinan, AA, VF, Eurosport ect to get their hands on it.

According to Automobile, it was just a couple ticks shy 0-60m and 1/4m of a E46 ///M3 out of the box....

The Bimmerforum dudes have it wrong: the 335i is not a Valvetronic car. It uses normal throttles. Yes, it's very fast! Yes, it's fairly heavy. I drove one for several days in Austria about seven weeks ago. You can read my take on it in Roundel next month. Roundel's own Sam Smith was involved in the Automobile dyno test and he was impressed.

Peak torque at around 2250 rpm or so? I smell a factory car with a very small turbo! Put a turbo with more potential on, up the boost a bit . . . This thing will fly in the hands of tuners, I can't wait to see it. :D

Try two small Mitsubishi - IHI turbos. They're so close to the exhaust valves, Mitsubishi had to develop turbine wheels of a different alloy to handle the heat. There are a bunch of other subtle changes, some major, like the block. The October issue of Bimmer magazine provides an overview of the technical aspects of this engine.

Ya, and if I remember right, the engine is fairly high compression, like 9:1 or higer.

Bimmer Magazine stated the CR was 10.2:1.

Something that I'm wondering about, how do you rebuild the engine or is it even possible. The article mentioned some stats on the block, all aluminum with high silicon content alloy making up the cylinder walls. Yup, alumnum cylinder walls. But it was the thinness of the walls that caught my attention, only 1.4mm total thickness between adjacent 'sic'. Makes me believe this is a throwaway engine.

Electrodeposition may be possible to restore the material lost to internal engine wear...

Wow... awesome dyno graph! The turbo's can be wound out past what they have now. The wastegates are activated at friggin' 1400 rpm! This car has a lot more on the table than you think, and I'd be willing to bet it not only kills the E46 M3 with a chip and boost controller, but the upcoming E91 as well.

Coated aluminum cylinder walls aren't some few fangled technology. A certain red sports car in my sig pic happens to have them from the factory. You can recoat them with their respective coating. Two popular coatings were Nikasil and Alumisil.

2 People that I know already have taken delivery of them, and, umm, these are people who bought them just to see what they are capable of.

Stock internals should be good for an easy 400@ Crank.. realisitically, with the Alusil cylinders, this car is not going to be capable of stupid power without stupid work.

If you want a FAST 3-Series go buy an E36 and put a 60-1 on it. Friend of mine did just that and he's over 500@ the crank in his 332is.

While your right on the E36 w/60-1, its not the point. The point really is that theres finally a BMW that is "tunable" again. With just a chip this car will have 314whp. With another $2k of equipment, probably 350whp+. That has never been the case with a BMW since the E23 745i. 350whp is more than the E39 ///M5!!!!!

The key now is getting this package in the 5series.

Because the more cars with that engine the more tuners that will be interested in tuning it. Like the Audi/VW 1.8/2.0T. Its everywhere, just like the # of tuners. More tuners, the cheaper the aftermarket parts will be.

Without sounding insulting... where did you get such a specific figure as 314whp? I don't doubt they can get it, but that's a pretty precise number for conjecture...

The dynos are at 275whp. The 1.8T gets ~50hp from a chip. Since the BMW has a bigger engine, I just added ~40whp. Its just a guess. I acutally meant to say 315whp.
