With my last turbo bimmer (E30) I used a draw-through design with regards to the AFM (yes, I used the stock AFM- it was only pushing 10psi ). I've seen some people charging the AFMs, and I'm wondering if anyone knows the longevity of such a setup, and about how much boost they can take before risking failure.

You already know the answer to this question.
