Heat Exchangability

Im setting up a Water/Air Intercooler setup, and Im not sure what size/type Heat Exchangers Ill need.

I bought an Aluminum Oil cooler with a core size of 11x3.6x2", So Im assuming Ill need another heat exchanger.

Are the Transmission Fluid coolers any good?

What size and how many Heat Exchangers work fine for other people?

What about one with a fan on it running continuously?

Initially you may want to run with the heat exchanger that you have right now. Drive around as you normally do on and off boost until you start noticing pinging from the engine due to heat soak.

If it soaks fairly quick then you have to add more capacity to the system. If it takes a lot of hard runs to heat soak you may be good for daily driving but not for track use. I used this method with the garrett IC and it takes many hard runs to heat soak the system. During normal operation it has never heat soaked. Capacity of this system is one gallon and a half with a heat exchanger 22X8X1.5. Pump is a continuous run type.

Just remember that when off boost the intercooler itself is acting as a heat exchanger as cool air is pulled through it cooling the heated liquid inside.

i have the tcd water/air setup and it uses two fmhe's. it's a nice little sleeper setup but i am looking into getting one much larger heat exchanger for the front. trying to get the charge cooling a little more effective but not sure whether or not one large cooler or 2 smaller coolers are the way to go yet.

Interesting. ey gol10dr1, What size Cores are your 2 H.E.'s?

Ive found some not-really-big CHEAP radiators(11x24) for like 40 bucks shipped on ebay. If i can fit one, I think I may run that. Ill see how my tiny oil cooler works first.

I bought that Pump that Ford Lightnenings use, kind of expensive but should be reliable for constant use.

Well,

Finally got my Liquid intercooler setup done. Ive driven it a few times, last couple times I really beat on it good, and it feels really fast.

I pull the car into the drive way after a lot of boosting, check the temperature of the water, and its BARELY WARM!. Feels like, maybe 90-95 degrees, probally less. The air out side was in the high to mid 70's.

I feel the intercooler, and the inlet End tank is a little warm(maybe 100-110), but the center of the intercooler and the outlet end-tank are just BARELY warm.

My "tiny" heat exchanger never has felt hot, jus BARELY warm. Im pretty amazed, after reading online, I would have thought Id need more Heat exchanger, but just this 11"x3.6"x2 really seems like its more than enough for now. Some time ill probally just add another same sized one next to it.

Im going to take pics of the setup(3" metal charge pipes and nice blue reinforced silicone couplers with T-bolt clamps).

Gotta see how much boost these injectors can take now, before I switch to some 50+lb er's. After that I need to save up for a T-70 turbo or similar.
