I've seen turbos feeding sequentially into superchargers, but have never seen them feeding the intake in parallel! Speaking of intakes, the main charge pipe's entry into the plenum is a bit screwy, ain't it?
I suppose you have to give kudos to originality at least!
Turbo Magazine did that sort of setup in a MR2. They called it compond charging. Bolted a SC up with a turbo. The tuning was riduculously complicated. But they did make ~35psil and 700hp.

Yeah, but that's sequential -- the turbo feeding the supercharger. This is parallel -- the turbo and the supercharger feed the same pipe.
Might that be a diesel (possibly a stupid question).... given the site the pics are on.....???? If so that just adds to the appeal. Incredible set up by the way as well, and I LOVE old benz wagons!
TIA
Justin
It is a diesel and it has what looks like an air valve/throttle in the outlet piping for the intercooler... initial boost from the supercharger and then open the valve to bring the turbo's boost online?

Yes, it is a 300td (5-cylinder, 3-liter turbodiesel). I've been perusing the various sites since I acquired one from Kyle in NO.
Well, it looks like a compound supercharger/turbo Chevy straight six in a dragster. What's so difficult to figure out about that?
Either my eyes/monitor aren't good enough to see or I'm simply too ignorant to recognize how the pieces are plumbed. I can't make out if the blowers are in parallel or series.
thats what I thought too when I first saw it, but then the SC>Air chamber>Turbos>Intake looked like it fit alot better. Anyone have any more pics of this baby ?
The MB setup is neat, and VERY nicely fabricated... but unless there is a diode-like one-way valve on the turbo's cold charge pipe, I wouldn't want it!!
The blower makes boost before the turbo does, great... but whe they aren't at the same boost level, what's preventing backsurge???

That's what I first thought but isn't that a plenum/air intake at 11 o'clock and open to the atmosphere? That's what made me wonder...
No, I'm pretty sure not. That chamber is what the turbos draw air from. Doesn't look to be open to the atmosphere. The intake would be below the turbos (not visible).
That MB is ridiculously complex, but I would love to see how well it worked. With the necessary controls a twin-charged diesel could be pretty awesome.
this dragster has a supra motor. it was at the nopi maryland end of summer race on display. just had the bottom end done though, no head on it.........it has two massive turbos that feed their own intercoolers and one enormous supercharger. in addition, each cylinder has it's own datalogger!
Those old oil burner Benzes aren't exactly using rocket science in the fuel metering process -- I wonder how you manage enrichment when you're cramming that much air in there...

I still haven't absorbed and digested the lingo and concepts, but they're using modified injection pumps with extended rack travel and changes to 7mm or 10mm plungers (?) (from 5.5mm stock). Apparently, the hot IP tuner over there is "Myna-Diesel" in Finland. They cram as much fuel in as they can while keeping pre-turbo EGTs under 1200F in extended running and 1400F in bursts.

unless my old eyes deceive me , that aint no chevy I6 , not with plugs sticking straight up . Thats some flavor of flathead, prolly a Crysler. I have no clue re intake mod
