Went to the dragstrip last night....Holy Shat!

Post by Kyle in NO »

As you might know, I recently "fixed" my car of its fuel starvation problems and figured I better have another go at the track to get some new numbers...Well tonight was another story! Temps in the upper 30s, overall a beautiful night for drag racing. The car was loving the COLD air (well cold for us coonasses anyway).

My previous best was 14.2 @ 102. Nothing to brag about...Managed to cut nearly a WHOLE SECOND off those times! Made 3 passes, as it was a bit crowded.

Best time of the night...13.3 @ 106.7! Woohoo! The last run I made would have been even quicker, but I missed the 2-3 shift...GRRRRR!!! I think it would have been in the 13.0-13.2 range. But that's OK. Next stop, high 12s!!! I'm gonna need to swap to a 3.25 gear too, cause I was already deep into the redline crossing the beams. Any faster and I'd have to either shift into 4th or bang the rev limiter.

Now remember folks, this is a non-intercooled S1 kit with only 11-12 psi!!! I think I'm gonna shit myself when I get the S3 stuff...

Here are the timeslip, a bad pic, and a video for your viewing pleasure:

Good shit, you sexy bitch!!

My buddy has a mildly modified '01 R6, and he was running low 12s with the front end strapped down so he wouldn't raise the wheel. A guy with a blown C5 Z06 was running low 12s, too, but they say he can't drive for shit.

So, IMHO, anything in the low 13s is badass!

The 12s are 'Vette territory!

Kyle, that's AMAZING! What tires were you running and what RPM did you launch at?

Not sure about the launch, but I could guess at about 3-3.5k or so...anything more and tires just spin and hop. I really need some bigger meats to go much faster, and less gear.

Currently running 225/50R16 Kumho Ecsta SPT, a decidedly non-drag racing tire. They do hook pretty well though, and will do the job until they wear out. ;)

Vette territory? Shit, I was faster than several of them already. Not 07 Z06 cars, but I was signifigantly faster than several older ones...I can't imagine adding another 100 hp. It will be rediculous!

Kyle,

WOW!!! That is awesome. My best time ever non intercooled was 13.59 @ 109 at 16psi. You now own the quickest S1 in the TCD world! Your engine is obviously making great power!

What was the 60' time for the 3rd run?

I am getting closer to running mine down the 1/8 strip that is a mile from my house.

That would have netted a 13.2 or better for sure! Better tires and more practice and you are in the 12s with your current power level!

What did the locals think? How did your buddy's RX7 run?

Any chance you weighed the car? Calculators indicate 320rwhp based on your mph and 3375lbs with driver.

Ha, they were kinda dumbfounded. One guy was like "that 4 door must have NOS!" Idiot...

There was a new Shelby GT500 in front of me that the magazines say should run a 12.9 in the 1/4. Guy could NOT drive, and I don't remember his times, but hell, I could probably get that with some more runs! I'm pretty stoked. :D

Not sure about the weight, but I left everything in there...toolkit, jack, spare tire, extra toolbox, clothes...probably about 100 lbs of stuff that could have been left out at least...

Sean had trouble launching his RX-7, it was either bogging or generating massive wheel hop. One run, huge bog. Next run, wheel spin and going nowhere fast. His good run got him a 13.8 @ 102 I believe. He can go a good bit faster if launching the damn turbo rotary was easier or a few more practice runs...

Empty the trunk and arrive with the gas level warning light on for next Weds! That'll get you another tenth. Get with the program. ;)

Kyle, that is badass fo' sho. I thought your car felt real fast last week. Gots ta love on that cool air. Slightly taller gear as you mentioned and some drag tires your in the 12's.

That would be saying something. TCD S1 in the 12's.

I was there for 2/3 of Kyle's runs. (haha... kyle's runs...)

That car took off like a rocket ship. Once it got settled, it was flat and fucking gettin it! The local rednecks didn't know what to think. "Things gawt naytruss awn it.."

Sean in his RX-7 turboII had some launching and traction issues. From his trap speeds, it seems to be a pretty stout car, though.

I din't want to run the super duty f-250. I just had it detailed.

Kyle,

I'm unclear as to what this means. Does this mean you ran up to 105 mph in 3rd gear with a differential geared MORE aggressively than 3.25? (i.e. 3.64, 3.73) How is that possible? I'm sure I'm mistaken, but clear this up for me. I was on an open stretch of open road tonight and I hit about 95 with my stock open diff (3.25) in 3rd gear before it was pretty much maxed up. Let me know

I was thinking the same thing. I had to shift to 4th in the 1/4 at 5er Fest last year with the 3.25.

Kyle has a 6800 rev limit and a 225/55/16 tire (25.74" tall) which translate into 107mph at 6800rpm in 3rd gear.

A 3.25LSD will give him 6400rpm in the same gear at the same mph.

I dunno. I just stayed in third and gritted my teeth lol. Shifting into 4th would've lost a few tenths I think...

Skeen, what were your times at the track in Indiana?

Generally when you're drag racing you want to be using all the gears, but with these cars traction becomes such an issue that lower (numerically) gears tend to make sense.

I should be hitting the drag strip with mine sometime this spring and with my 3.46s and 400ft-lbs of torque I'm a little worried about my launch. Hopefully I'll have DRs by then.

Great times Kyle. That mph is worth 12s easy, if you can hook up.

You want to finished at the top of a gear. Preferably 3rd but 4th if your mph warrants it.

Yeah, and most of my experience is drag racing NA Mustangs which behave differently. Generally with those, you want to gear the hell out of the car and cross at the top of 4th so you maximize all your gears.

Crossing in third vs fourth was actually slower, even though you had one less shift, because it meant you weren't using enough gear.

That said, I would be surprised if I didn't have to shift to 4th.

Yeah, cause those cars are under powered. and are very easy to launch with a straight axle and tons of gear.
