Alpina style intake manifold

Post by Lee in Ottawa »

Hey guys, i'm planning for down the road, I know it's not common practise or easy but I want to run a FMIC on the e34. I would also like to move the throttle body to the opposite side of the intake manifold like Alpina did on the B10 turbos. Anyway as you can see in this pic they used and electronically controlled throttle body which my e34 does not have. I was thinking of somehow making some brackets and moving the throttle body over.

What I'd like to know is aren't manual cables preffered? I thought electric ones had slight delays (not that Id probably ever notice) What do you guys think I should do?

Or if any of you guys have tried this can you please chime in and maybe post some pics.

Update, found out that later 535i's came with electronic throttles. Like so http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-735i ... enameZWDVW

Think it could be made to work? How do they work in terms of signal? wiring?

Holy crap, BMW did throttle by wire that long ago.

I've seen setups where the throttle was relocated to the opposite side and made to work by cable. It requires a bit of fabrication, but not much.

The 850ci was the first production car with throttle-by-wire. ;)

Have any pics of these examples by chance?

If you look at any E34 gauge cluster, theres EML light in it. Thats the electronic throttle light. BMW knew from day one on the E34 it would get TBW.

If your going to implement TBW, you have to add a host of electronics and wiring. There is a ECU for it and a harness that goes to the other ECUs, mainly IHKR, DME, AEGS and data comm to the rest of the systems. You don't want to go there, trust me, manual throttle is fine.

Ya i've done some more research and have decided to stick too the cable. Just have to find a clean safe way to mount it.

I am under the impression that EML is BMW's electronic traction control, and EDK is the electronic throttle control. I know traction control is an option for the e32 and e34 also. Are you sure about EML?

EDIT:
Looks like in the case of the e34, cars with traction control (EML) have the EDK, or electronic throttle. I guess that made more sense than the EML implemented on the e36, which used an entirely separate throttle. But EML, much like ABS, is different than EDK.

The TCD prototype '92 E34 was/is throttle by wire.

excuse my ignorance, but whats the problem with FMIC's in e34s? I would think theyd have more space than e28s, no?

Electric motor linkage or electronic motor linkage one of the two.

EDK is the electronic throttle iself, EML is the electronics that control it. Also, i beleive the e32 750iL, starting in maybe 88 had EML before the 850. I dont think any V12s ever had cable throttles

Theres not more room in a E34 for a FMIC. The E34 and E28 have ~ the same area. So space if very limited if you have A/C.

A mate of mine did this when he turbo charged his 335, he had the flat side skimmed and had his throttle cable running inbetween the intake runners. He has now ditched this and is using some E28 M5 ITB's with his turbo motor.

LOL, before i die, i want to fit this twin 60mm TB to my N/A M30, how long have i been trying to do this mod

I have to disagree there. EML is electronic engine power regulation per BMW's service literature. This required an electronic throttle in the case of the e34. Theres no way to override a throttle cable other than to use another throttle upstream of the main butterfly, as in the e36 318. I guess in this case BMW liked the single electronic throttle better. But we do have two completely different acronyms here.

An interesting tidbit:

My 4/87 Euro 520i has an EML legend - I forget whether there's a bulb behind it, and the car certainly doesn't have EML, but I'm puzzled as to why it's there in the first place.

Perhaps BMW considered traction control for one of the models that little legend was installed on.

Perhaps.

What I wonder about is whether or not EML ever made it into an E28.. Maybe in testing? I don't know.
