td manifold valve adjustment

Post by turbodan »

The turbo car has been about due for a valve adjust, so I tried it this afternoon. Back when it was going together the first time, the placement of the turbo required nine 3/8" thick flanges between the manifold and turbine inlet to get it far enough from the motor to clear the spark plug railing and everything else. I had hoped that this massive 3+ inch stack would allow for removal of the valve cover without having to disturb the turbo.

When it came down to it, I could almost get the valve cover out of the way, but I was hitting the compressor housing trying to lift it out. I might have been able to wiggle it out anyway, but I decided removing the compressor housing was the easiest way to get it out. This is dangerous, as the compressor housing fits the compressor wheel very tightly, and there isn't a lot of room to wiggle it off. You can definitely dick the compressor wheel blades up in the process. During the valve adjustment, the compressor wheel is also exposed, and vulnerable to any clumsy moves.

It might be easier to remove the whole turbo, and it would keep the compressor wheel blades out of harms way. That would mean four bolts for the turbine inlet, and five nuts on the turbine discharge. Either way, it looks like something has to move. Thats just a valve adjust. Spark plugs require turbo removal.

I didn't take any. If you need a shot of anything in particular I can take a few shots.

But it feels so...wrong.

I'll take some this weekend if I remember.
