That "other" method of boost...

Anyone ever supercharged an E28? Or is this some kind of heresy I've committed by even asking?

No room. In theory, it would be much easier. No exhaust modifications and if you do not intercool, easy intake plumbing.

Modest boost only, 5-10 psi and it will run out of breath at higher rpm. The guys on bimmerforums.com with newer BMW's run SCers a lot. Lots of problems with belt slippage, compressor noise/ceasing and other stuff. Different set of problems with SCing. There is no free lunch to more horse power.

Man.......for some reason, this thread feels like dé·jà vu big time.

No kidding, no joke intended.

I'm about 90% sure I remember someone posting a year or two about a SC E28. It seems it was a bit of a homebrew car; in fact, Todd, didn't you work on tuning someone's SC car or something?

I've always seen supercharging as better suited to very large displacement engines, and turbos for smaller displacement. E28's are relatively small displacement, and you have plenty of room, so turbocharging seems to me to be the way to go.

I've seen some other engines compared with turbos and superchargers, and the turbos always seem to come out on top for the same boost pressure. They seem more efficient in most applications.

Shawn Daly put an Eaton SC on his 82 Euro E24. Todd did some of the tuning I believe. It did fit, but the plumbing was tight. Valve adjustments were going to be a bitch. Cost was quite a bit more than an off the shelf TCD kit.

Yep, it was a valid effort by the builder but the end results were mediocre.

I have some form of shadetree s/c project in the works. I'm using an eaton m90 bolted directly to a manifold that I welded up, basically a box with runners from an e12 m30 manifold, the log style design. I'm gonna run prolly 10 psi, with no intercooler, and stock motor. I'm gonna find d'sylva for a chip for it, and run a rrfpr. I think he likes to use knock sensors, so i shouldnt grenade my engine.
Now, this is all on hold because im broke, and in college, and likely have to start paying my own rent/insurance/phone bills etc, but i'd like to finish it at some point.

I figure that I can prolly get between 260-280, more if all the work was a little more professionally done. It'll be a rough around the edges project, but it will be fun, i'll learn, and by the end i'll have substantially less than $1k into the whole project.
