question about auto raditor and trans oil cooler

Post by g00b86 »

Hey guys, Ive been on the hunt now for a new radiator for my 86 535 with manual trans. I came across one but for an auto trans and the guy said i would need to plug up the trans cooler lines in it to make it work. However, it got my hears turning and i was thinking if this is at all possible; can i use the trans cooler lines to plumb into my turbo inlet/return lines and use the trans cooler as an oil cooler for my turbo set up. Does this defy anything that would go against convention or is this something that could actually work out in my favor. Its mostly because the price of the radiator is too good to let go and the guy told it was for a 5 speed then said its an auto radiator and im trying to make the best out of this situation. Please let me know if this is a completely retarted idea or something do able. Thanks again for your time. Ryan

You don't need to plug the trans cooler ports to use the radiator in your application. Just run some denatured alcohol or varsol through the cooler to get any residual trasmission fluid out of it and you should be good to go.

I don't believe I would use the transmission cooler as an oil cooled. You'd be better off getting the correct oil filter housing and installing a conventional oil cooler.

The return for the turbo needs to be unresticted.

As a cooler for a return line, I don't think it'd pose a restriction in terms of normal flow, but the problem is that the return would have to run uphill. Thus, until it ran uphill and got a siphon effect going, it wouldn't drain well, and the turbo would never drain completely.
