Looking for Feedback on TCD S2 - New to Turbo(s)

Post by ChristopherL »

Group (Todd, you are obviously included!),

I'm looking for some feedback on the TCD S2 kit.
Primarily, I'm interested to know when/how the boost comes on when driving. My e28 is a daily driver/primary mode of transport. I do enjoy that the torque starts "fairly" early and I don't have to rev it out to get moving. On my daily commutes, I infrequently take it over 4500rpm. If I want to be a redline shift jockey, I'll drive my E30 M3.

So, this brings on the question, when does the power "come on" with the TCD kit? If it only starts to make boost at 4k+(?) it doesn't seem like something I'd be interested.

I am entirely new to the dynamics of turbos... so please forgive any ignorance/assumptions on this. I've recently spent a good deal of time driving my company car ('06 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT with STI engine/suspension package) and I loved how the boost came on seamlessly at 2800rpm and just kept pulling. There was no need to rev the car out to make it move.

So, in the cliff notes: Can anyone comment on the TCD S2 kit and how you like it? Todd, please feel free to add your input as well!

Kind Regards,
Chris

Chris,

The base turbo (60 trim) provides nearly lag free response. We can size the turbo smaller but still appropriate if necessary. FYI, our S3 test car made 18psi at 3000rpm!

How does that relate to its ability to maintain(?) boost at higher RPM's?

I guess really the only way to know what I'd like is to drive a variant or 2 of your setups?

I saw the installs in both the e28 & e30 at the Lars Anderson Museum before you moved... but I've never driven a TCD equipped car.

EDIT: Also, given that the engine in my car is the 10:1CR euro model, would this pose any problems?

TCD kit

Post by TodB »

I'd suggest getting a ride in a "TCD'd" car at the Bav Auto show to get an idea of performance. I'll bet there will be one or two there. Jeremy?

Sounds like the maroon car is coming together and that you are becoming an E28 convert? They are juuussst a bit addicting

 It's kept me from buying an e39 thus far...when I started on this little journey I bought it as an emotional/nostalgia impulse. Now that I've driven it, I think I do like it!

If someone has a TCD'd car at Show & Shine, I'd love to get a quick ride! If I can get a good bit more "oomph" then I can avoid the urge to buy something more 'plush'.

Oh, and shame on you Tod! ;)

You should see if Jeremy will give a ride in the red 535is. He scared me pretty badly during the parade laps at the Rolex Vintage Show at Limerock. That car could pursuade anyone to go with a TCD kit.

Also, the powerband is really smooth in Jeremy's car. In 2nd gear with a 2.93LSD at around 2500rpm, it just pulls like crazy. It's really quite an efficient setup.

Coupe

Interesting picture...

I am assuming the "shame" is for planting my butt on my Coupe?

Sorry I missed you at LRP.

I'd be happy to get a ride in any TCD'd car.
I'll have to keep the diff ratio in mind though... mine has a brand new 3.46LSD so that will probably effect acceleration a good bit.

Tod,
I never made it to LRP. :( (I stole the picture from another attendee)1 flat tire on my M3 has left me driving on the dry-rotted spare while I wait for 2 replacements. I didn't want to risk driving to CT on that.

Car looks great. Glad to see the ultra clean green machine was back this year. I (along with others) was bummed we didn't get the silver car down there.

Anyway, getting a bit off-topic here. Sorry!

The turbo capacity far exceeds the power level of the motor so holding boost is not a problem.

10.0CR means limits the amount fo boost you can run to about 10psi on 93 octane.

Chris, I actually have two TCD cars. One has the s1 kit on an 8:1 "green" motor, running 10psi with 3.46 diff and Motronic. The other is the former TCD test mule with custom s2 kit plus Megasquirt standalone and 2.93 diff.

They both exhibit fantastic torque from just about any rpm. Coming on cam in either at WOT is about like sticking a bull with a taser. If you're at BavAuto, be sure you come find me and we'll go for a ride and drive.

Thank you Jeremy!
I'd very much like to get a ride in either car if possible.

Thanks for the offer!

coupe

The blue Coupe is a 1970 2800CS with the following mods:
  • 3.3L M30 with dual 38 Weber carbs, Schrick cam and lightened flywheel
3.0 CS vented brakes, front and rear (2800's had rear drums)
Bilstein HD shocks, Carl Nelson springs and sway bars
    5 Speed w/3.45 LSD
    Front CSL like air dam
    16" staggered Alpinas
I'm quite happy with it. I've always wanted one and pulled the trigger back in 2000. The green Coupe next to it is very near concours in appearance. Its stunning.

Um, well, the ride is currently down for repairs. It developed a bad wheel bearing up in NH. Ordered a new one yesterday from Steve, but weather isn't looking too cooperative, so I'm not sure when I'll be able to get it done.

Where are you located?

On another note, what happened to ChristopherL? I never saw him at BavAuto. Mike Kovac, Tim Muritzis, Adrian in FL, KillerPM all got rides while I was up in NH.

Jeremy,

Believe it or not... I was at Bav.
Infact, you all drove right past myself and a few friends in Portsmouth. (My friend was the goofy kid throwing thumbs up and jumping into the road while you were driving towards the parking garage.)

Unfortunately, I was under the weather and was recovering from some surgery earlier that week so I didn't spend much time up and moving around that day.

I wish I'd had a chance to get a ride...

Thank you again for the offer!
