Big fun at Mid-Ohio this past weekend!
Dave Read and I attended a PCA school at Mid-Ohio this past weekend. The event was well run and the attendees very friendly. I even won a set of Dunlop tires (any 4 they make!)
We both ran our m30 turbo cars. My e34 is lightly modified. H&Rs, Bilstein sports, Hawk HT-10s and 235/45 Toyo RA1s on 17x9s all around. Boost of course! Ran 9.5psi for the weekend. Zero lag and huge torq at 3500rpm made the car very easy to drive. Despite the body roll, it was great fun to drive.
Dave's car is more serious as he does 3000 miles a year on the track. He drives it to/from the events and daily as well. He cam down from Toronto with his small trailer behind. His car is a 89 M6 with an e34 m30 engine. It's a built motor with our S3 kit. We built the air/air intercooler to his specs and he did the charge air piping. He is runnning 12psi and a 3.91 diff. It's really strong as the GT3 guys found out. Several walked over to inspect the car to find out what was going on. He has installed, coilovers, adj sways, camber adjs front/rear and C5 brakes. Car rolls on 17x9 255/40 RA1s.
I think I finally have the road course bug after all these years of drag racing.

Yes, I was smiling, but the GT3's were quicker and a lot had to do with the driver as there was a considerable lap time differential betweent the two GT3's.
I need to get my front suspension settings sorted out and put the car on a diet. The car understeered for the weekend, I think it's a bit stiff in the front.
Anyway it is pretty cool to be able to stay with a tricked out GT3 on the straights at only 12 pounds of boost. One of the Porsche guys nicknamed my car the flame thrower!
Cheers,
Dave

It's the modern version of the Canonball Run.

Only the racing part happens on actual race tracks these days. Check out the "History" link at the above site for a pretty good explanation.

On E28's, a Dinan suspension system will have stock spring rates up front and 2x spring rates in the rear(both lower the car). The sway bar is set to full soft front and full stiff in the rear. This will set the car much closer to neutral, even on a E24.

Interesting about the Dinan set up. My car was loose at the last track event so I added rear negative camber, no other changes. I worked on tire pressure through the Mid-Ohio weekend and finally added more front camber. Next step will be to soften the front bar, and resist the temptation to overdrive the car. I did get it pretty close to neutral by the end of the weekend, and as I have access to power oversteer I want the car to tend toward understeer.

glad to see you got the road course bug. it is fun in these cars. I sold the turbo got 12k. new owner is happy. I have purchased my next project an e30 325is. I too had people at porsche club days asking me what was in my car. because they were constantly having to let me by. what fun. Craig glad to see your old car on the track again
