Who's Running Oil Coolers

Post by andy535iyes »

As I plan my project, I was wondering if I should be trying to source an oil cooler. Who's running them, what's your setup, and what changes did you see in your temps.

Thanks,
Andy

running a B35 oil cooler and so far it has worked the same as the m106 unit.

I really only notice it during the brief summer we have here in Colorado. It helps to regulate the temp every now and then when the turbo spools. The oil temp will creep to 200-210 during extended periods of boost but 5 minutes after it will come back down to 150 when cruising and it will take 10 minutes when stopped.

Hey Ray,
I bought an 059 chipped ECU from you a couple of years ago. Where is your's mounted? Do you run an intercooler of any type?
Thanks,
Andy

Hey there Andy, yes I recall when we met a couple of years back. The oil cooler is mounted in the stock location for mounting an oil cooler to the e28. The ends of the frame rails. I have a water to air intercooler in the engine bay I am not sure if this was mounted in the car back when we met.

I've got an oil cooler on my M20. Even with a water cooled, ball bearing turbo the cooler thermostat would open up under city driving on a summer night. I'm sure it'll be running a little hotter with an oil cooled, journal bearing turbo.

I'm sure it makes a significant difference when I'm really beating on it.
