Turbo Build The beginning Update

Post by Badger »

The white car 88 535is was my DD for the last 2-3 years. It looks good in pics but it is messy. Lots of rust, it was from florida and i think some jerk drove it on the beach a lot. The donor is 85 535 i purchse from mattmcginn from ct who is on this board. The shell/frame was suppose to be in mint condition but as you can see there was a minor accident and the tow hook and a little sheet metal under the frame was bent. I have to cut some of that metal anyway to fit an intercooler and the frame seems straight so no biggie.
I posted in FI cause it's an FI build. This was my first day workin on it. Here's my part list i've ordered so far
Steve Haygood
Front Strut Bearing, ST Sway Bars, M5 Mounts, Dog Bones,
Front Rotors, Front Pads, Rear Pads, Heater Control Valve -
Brake Booster Seal, E34 M5 Guibo/Flex disc, Plug Wires, Steering Components, center, Outers, idler
UUC Motorwerks
Evo III Short Shifter , Double Shear Selector Rod, SS Brake Lines
Ireland Engineering
Urethane Motor Mounts, Urethane Tranny Mounts, Urethane Steering Coupler, Front Camber Plate, Rear Camber Adjust,
Rear Toe Adjust
silverstonetuning.com
spax psx adjustable shocks and springs

All the suspension is getting sand blasted and then powered coated. I'm going to sand down the shitty coat of peeling paint and then try to find someone local that paints well and isn't super expensive. Enjoy the pics . . . more to come

Front and Rear suspension is totally off and completely dismantled.
Engine bay - pics suck no light - im tired - everything is out just the wiring is hanging.
Completly ripped out interior down to the padding. Now i have to chip up all the sounds deadening crap and lay down the good stuff! More to come later this week.

Awesome! Keep us posted as you go!
I noticed you said you were using a FMI, what kind of plans you got for the turbo setup?

Nice start on things. You're right about the white car looking good. Shame it's rusty. That's going to be nice when you're finished. I'll keep an eye on this one.

Hey looks great - gotta love a FI e28 build. Couple things while the e28 is so far part...-

e34 M5 rear trailing arms have spherical bushings in them and I am 95% sure they will fit our cars. I will get a set in the next week and post results.

e31 front control arms have spherical bushings and they fit our cars.

I am researching on whether the e39 528i- 530i rack and pinon steering can be made to fit our cars. The e36 stuff does not work because the rack mounts in front of the sub-frame, we need a rear mount rack. Anyone here have an e39 that would be will to crawl under it? I have checked real-oem.com and ebay but the images are not clear. The ratio on the e39 rack is around 14.2 to 1, much quicker than the standard e28 box.

Good luck and keep us all posted.

I have an e21 323i power steering rack that I am planning on fitting to mye28. It is a rear mount and will plumb into the hydro system the way the recirc ball does. The mounts are built into the rack so it never used rubber or urethane busings. I had an e39 but I do not remember if the mount was front or rear.

Very cool and good to know on the e21 323 setup. Do you know what the ratio is?

Easier to find and less costly are E32 750i trailing arms. These are the same pieces used on the E34 M5.

You are right, it is the same part number for the e34 M5 and e32 (V12) - good call.

There are some ebay right now, I am picking them up right now. Will keep the group posted.

Sound proofing/insulation is all out, including headliner. I will be buying stuff from the artisan cause i looked through his e30 pics today and they were real good. Next up is sandblasting the firewall in the engine bay and por15, primer, paint, sound proof. Wash up the interior and re-sound proof it. I'm gonna spray liquid sound proof the roof and in any holes/hard to get areas. Bought a heat gun at homedepot for $60, it makes removing the sound proofing 100 times easier and will make installing easy also.

Got the tires off my style 5s today and have to take those apart also and refinish them.

I think im gonna have to buy a carpet from bavauto. It's the only place i can find that sells carpets with the attached foam. Anyone know of another place pls let me know. I might have another update this weekend but I really need to get out and drink some beer and touch some girls. Ive been either at work or in the garage since last friday. pics

Looks like you have a helluva start! I'll be very curious on the results of how it rides. :D This will give me something to compare my own combo to.
