I want to put a 745i motor into my car. I would like to know how to make it california leggal. I know i have to do something witha referee. Any help is appreciated.
By the book, it doesn't have to be newer, just at least as new as... but realistically they're not going to know the difference if all the same equipment is there. Best bet is to find an engine out of a car with full EPA/DOT releases, a BAR tag and documentation. Failing that, call your local referee and discuss what you want to do. More than likely he'll work with you, and help tell you what he'd like to see in order to issue a certification.
Back in the day when we were importing new gray-market 745i's, our cars would pass certification with an air pump that existed simply to blow fresh air into the exhaust downstream of the catalytic converter to dilute the exhaust gases with the fresh air. I don't know what CARB requires but most likely the biggest problem will be during cold start, if they measure it, or total emission rather than percentage. It might be easier to move!
Slap some a 745i vin & badges on it & call it a day! Of course you'd also need someone to smog it that blind enough to not know the difference between an e28 & e23.
I guess that is one luxury of the part of the Midwest in not needing to get smogged.
Thats not too bad.However i was also considering an e34 540i motor, and i was just wondering how that would compare to the 745 turbo in speed and also in terms of fitting it in. Which would you prefer?.
Yeah that isnt too bad but i was goin for a more stocky approach, an e39 540 perhaps. There about 290-300hp? Please correct me if im wrong. Anyway im askin for your opinion guys, which would you prefer:
745i turbo
e39 540i
m30 3.5 turbochargd

It would be down 6 HP from a stock E28 M5 engine and probably the same torque. (not sure what 745s put out since they varied depending who federalized them)
Stock M5 was good for 0-60 6.3 Sec and top speed of 150+ w/ 3:91 rear end. Still pretty quick/fast by today's standards IMO. Just don't race my 17 year old's Mazda Speed 3.....sucker is rated at 264 HP stock and is limited to 155MPH!
