list of parts needed for a b35 swap....

Post by ChefShawn »

Some prices for parts listed, all parts ordered through Steve Haygood - the best source. Thank you Steve.

EDIT for a 1988 635csi b35 transplant to a 1988 535is
B35 engine into an E28

EDIT: I am recycling this post, I figured out it's definitely worth it to do the b35 swap now and I was looking for a list of things I would need. Here is the list of things I have come up with so far.

I believe the b35 engine to have the more desirable mounts. I heard this is because the engine is an early production engine.

what other parts do i need?

1. Super ETA harness w Motronic 1.1/1.3 0 (found out through research that this piece is optional, you can use just the e28 harness.) $125
2. timing components are the timing chain, sprockets, tensioner, and guides (recommended) approx $100
3. All new seals (recommended, see below)
4. water pump $50
5. new oil pump $350
6. thinking maybe - 533 lightweight flywheel?
7. M5 pressure plate $146
8. Alternator (upgrade) $169
9. P/S $169
10. ICV $112
11. AFM - Programma $222 exchanged - Python $180 exchanged - New $280

maybe ....
12. G265- with either G265 bellhousing OR e12
13. G265 drive shaft

G265 bellhousing $100

14. 179 Brains (optional, optimizes engine management) $100
15. Timing chain (recommended)
16. Timing chain guides / tensioner (recommended)
17. T-stat (recommended) $20
18. Vacuum hoses/lines (recommended) $30
19. Fuel injectors (recommended) $120
20. Intake boots
21. Engine mounts (recommended) $18
22. TPS
23. Harmonic balancer (needed)

thanks

~Shawn

Seals/Gaskets needed - are relatively all inexpensive and should definitely be done.

- Front lower cover seal
- Front cover shaft seal
- Front timing cover seal
- Front timing cover shaft seal
- Oil pan gasket
- Rear main seal
- Pilot bearing
- Rear duck seal (back of the head)
- Rear coolant port seal (back of the head)
- Valve cover gasket
++++++ Steve Haygood Prices+++++++++

Timing cover set ,seals and gaskets 14.50

Cam seal 3

Oil pan gasket 5

Rear seal 8

Pilot 6

Rear duck 1-1.25

Port gasket 1-1.25

Valve cover gasket 7-7.50

No, that's the beauty of the Super ETA harness. It is the only E28 with Motronic 1.1/1.3, so you don't have to splice wires into the fusebox, it justs plugs right in. If you look a few threads down, you'll see the other discussion which tells you which plugs need to be changed and/or lengthened.

ORIGINAL POST:::::::::

does it fit?

what modifications are there?

is it worth it?

the seller writes...
"1988 BMW 635csi This is the higher output engine put into the 635csi in 1988 with 208 horsepower and 225 lbs.ft of torque."

is this even true?

thanks for your help, my current engine has high mileage and I was thinking(dreaming maybe) of swapping with this one, but it may be more work then it's worth.

Sounds like an ordinary B35 swap. If it were my car, and my B34 was in bad shape, I'd consider it.

Yes

Not many if any with the 88 635csi m30b35 it should have all the engine mounts on the block still and bolt right up into your e28. Just get the ecu. Im not sure about the engine harness from the 635csi, but if you get an 88 528e super eta engine harness its virtually plug and play.

Yes the m30b35 came in the 88-89 635csi and is 208 HP.

great! thanks... I am finding more and more write-ups about it now. seems popular for the small gain, but hey any gain is good gain. I just need to figure out if the engine mounts are there or not.

The b35 running on Motronic 1.3 also idles smoother, revs smoother, makes more power and gets a bit better fuel economy.

Not worth it just for power, too much money and time to power ratio IMO.
Im doing it just to get rid of the cold start valve, reference sensors, and thermo time switch

Why is super-eta harness so desirable over the correct b35 harness again? And by "almost" plug and play you mean it will require cutting and extending wires?

It sounds like you are on track to get it all sorted out and you've got an engine secured.

As mentioned it is the easiest method to wire up the b35. However, to be the fly in the ointment, I still prefer the clean look of the e34 b35 harness with its fancy little plastic wiring harness trim that goes over the fuel rail. It is a bit of extra work, but I would still probably use an e34 harness again (making sure it didn't have EML!). You can see the rail pretty well in this pic.

I like the cleaner look of the e34 harness too. I had both the e34 and the super eta harness.I rewired my super eta harness to utilize the e34 FI cover.

P.S.
Will the A/C Compressor fit on the B35 bracket? Or do I need to switch it to the bracket from my old motor?

I just bought a m535i without the engine, tranny driveaxle

As i was doing searches, the M535i.org doesnt exist anymore??

Could someone hook me up with the wiring scheme.
I bought a m30b35 from 1988 (no EML) e34 including harness ecu tranny alternater etc.
it came of a complete vehicle i can even take the fusebox if this would improve something.

maybe BBR can help me?
