Build Numbers by color code
This question has probably been answered quite some bit by now. However when I search I could not come up with anything.
My question is; Is there any way I can see how many E28's were made in a certain color.
I'm interested in seeing how many Bahama Beige Metallics were produced. Paint code is 170.
This is a chance for you e28 guru's to show off your stuff and and prove how knowledgeable you are. Think of it as a competition.
As a bonus, how can I find out how many were made with my exterior/interior combo. I'm not even sure what my interior is, but it's a very dark brown.
Thanks.

Actually it would be easy with access to BMW ASAP. Plug in each vin and grab the color off the result and keep totals.
Now who has access to ASAP and who is going to enter those VINs.
Of course you could limit putting in the US VINs and the vin for cars produced before Bahama Beige was introduced or after Bahama Beige was discontinued. It was available from 83-86 based on the BMW color charts.

Ahh,
My apologies everyone. I thought that there would have been a running total of each color made and recorded.
Since there isn't I don't it would be worth anyones time to find out, if they even could.
Thanks for the help though!
Does anyone know what dark brown I am talking about fort he interior color? Ill try to get a picture.

Probably 0205 Nutria. Nothing else really matches your description, or goes with Bahama. Taurus would have a decided red tint. Nutria is more earthy and even has a greenish cast. With Nutria your dashboard may even be the same color. Taurus would likely have a black dash. Pull your rear-seat bottom and there should be a build-card there with the upholstery information and codes.TheRealStig99 wrote:Does anyone know what dark brown I am talking about fort he interior color? I was a BMW salesman/salesmanager/general manager from 1976 to 1995 and don't recall ever willingly stocking Bahama in any model. That means I never ordered any but we had a few that BMW NA allocated to us from port stock, diverted, or regionally or nationally BMW NA-ordered vehicles. Not that it was a bad color but, like mink brown and sable brown, there just wasn't much demand for it at the time.
Sort of like the regional advertising-group special Cinnabar 528e models; who comes up with these colors? They're only desirable for their rarity in later years. Just to show how confused BMW was on their E28 colors, when Bronzit was announced they described it as "white gold" and their suggested interior combination for it was blue.

I have the official BMW NA paint and upholstery books with actual swatches. The two closest in applicability to this question would be the 1982 and the 1985 model year books. I'm happy to try to take pictures in sunlight and see how they turn out.
I'm assuming the original poster has a U.S. 528e since I dont remember any 535i in Bahama, and the color book for 1985 seems to bear that out. The '82 book shows Mocha 0109 as an available choice only for the 633CSi model. The '85 book doesn't have Mocha as a choice at all, the only dark "brown" colors being Taurus and Lama. On RealOEM.com, the only dark brown choice for 1983-84 on a 528e seems to be Nutria. For '85, add Taurus. I can check and see what printed year-specific color charts I saved.

I posted shots of the applicable 1985 color book pages two post up. It's hard to tell the colors apart in the photos because it's hard to tell them apart in person! I also have vinyl and velour pages and can do those later if anyone feels the need. I also have the 1982 book. Later on I'll dig for the applicable color-chart handouts (customer brochures) for those years, too.
