Good or Bad?
My transmission for my Mercedes is being rebuilt. It calls for Dexron III. I was thinking of using Amsoil and I was wondering what your thoughts were or what experiences you may have had. Otherwise, what do you feel is the very best product available?

I've used amsoil ATF in my automatic cars for years. Great stuff as far as I can tell. Never had a ATF related failure. My wifes mini van gearbox broke mechanically when a clutch hub snapped off its spindle, but the valve body and clutch packs all still looked good in there.. Prior to that I changed her honda accord over to that stuff and it made the car shift about 300% smoother. Fuel econ seemed to go up too.
the most impressive thing I've seen myself was a Saab with the dreaded GM steering rack "morning sickness" When I replace the PS fluid with the amsoil ATF it bought me close to about 2 years before I had to replace the rack.
I would never say something bad about a product i have never used.....but.....I always go with the OEM recomendation on fluids....they designed it they know what fluid to put in it....Steve
thats like the 7500 plus mile recommended oil change intervals that came about because car manufacturers were offering free maintenance and wanted to save money by not having to do oil changes as often.. which i believe a few companies have come back and said they were wrong (i heard bmw was one?).. i have the conspiracy theory mentality and believe the only reason they recommend one thing or another is because they're recieving benefits in some way from the oil producer for reommending as such.. but thats my $0.02
Has anyone tried amsoil ATF in a Chrysler that requires ATF+4? Need to take care of the wife's van. The +4 is only available at the dealer and our dealer here is so bad I refuse to deal with them. The next time they will see our van is when I drive it through the showroom window!
There are quite a few brands of plus 4 available, although I forget what brands. See if you can check with some kinda oil supplier, I'm sure they will know how and where to get it. More than anything, +4 is mostly a newer, synthetic version of +3. Kinda like Mercon III, and Mercon V.

Well, I recall someone on Roachfly using the same logic to explain why he kept using TRXs: BMW knows what they're doing, and who are we to say TRXs are no good -- if TRXs aren't the best, why did BMW use them?
My point is that what BMW specified at the time was the best for the E28, but automotive synthetics were in their infancy back then and weren't a realistic mass-market option. I have no doubt the Amsoil product surpasses regular Dexron II by a long shot. That's what matters -- it meets the specifications. In this case, it exceeds the specifications. In fact, I don't believe you can get Dexron II anymore -- it's been superceded by Dexron III.

Redline makes a D4 ATF which is supposed to be quite good; however that's spendy stuff to stick in a Chrysler minivan!

Is a Chrysler minivan transmission any less costly to repair upon failure? Should one's family not ride in a well maintained, safe, reliable vehicle? Are premium fluids and lubricants only reserved for older european autos?':?'
just a few questions...

I value all of my vehicles. If using a better grade of anything will extend the life of one of my cars, I will more than likely use it. If using oil A will extend the life of the mini-van by even a year, I will use it. That is cheap compared to car payments.
I don't think it is crazy to use premium fluids in any car your plan on keeping for any period of time. If it is a lease car you are turning at the end of the lease who cares? I'm planning of keeping this van for another 5 years. Premium fluids are cheap compared to a new transmission.

Okay, both of you, points taken! I surrender! LOL. ... my 2nd car is a beater GTI that I actually *do* use synthetics in ... just not Redline! Hmm, that car is due for a tune-up about now, while we're on the subject.
