Thanks to the previous 6-spd post, I started surfing the web to try to find out if there
are any possible candidates for a 6-speed swap. Well, I came across a little bit of info,
and proceeded to spend the next few hours searching for more, instead of studying for
the GMATs like I had planned to. So, here's what I've found...

So, after looking up pictures of all GM 6-speeds I could find (the ZF out of a c4 vette and
the T56 out of a Camaro), I started looking around for Getrag stuff...and came across this.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... ename=WDVW

Sooo, an e30 M3 box (getrag 265 or CR 262) fits a Volvo...interesting...

BTW, I haven't looked at a G265 Bellhousing separated from the tranny before. Does bolt
pattern, where the tranny bolts to the housing, look like this?

Okay...so now I start looking around for Volvo Getrag stuff, and eventually come across this:

http://wwwrsphysse.anu.edu.au/~amh110/T ... mpared.htm

Why are they comparing the Getrag 262 and 265 out of a BMW with the Volvo tranny? Perhaps
are they compatible?

When you click on the link entitled "Have you seen...", you come up with this (actually, you can
just click here instead):

http://wwwrsphysse.anu.edu.au/~amh110/T ... o_info.htm

Okay, so the Getrag M51 bell housing appears to have the same bolt pattern as the supposed
e30 m3 bell housing in the ebay auction. Does this mean that a Getrag 251 will fit our cars? Don't
know anything about the tranny itself, but there is a rare dogleg G251 gearbox with some interesting
gear ratios (super-tall 1st & 2nd, normal 3rd, similar 4th & 5th to BMW dogleg). The regular 251 5-spd
has shorter 1st & 2nd gears, with similar 3-5 as the G265...not sure if anyone would want that.

Of course, this Volvo page is somewhat dedicated to putting a Toyota Supra motor in his Volvo, so he
posted some stuff about the GETRAG 6-spd from the twin-turbo Supras. So what do I do? Start looking
up Getrag V160 information. First, I found this picture on ebay:

Not too helpful. But then, I stumbled upon this page, which has a lot of great pictures and technical data:

http://www.turbosupras.com/pages/technical/V160.htm

Doesn't look like anything would just bolt up, but that would be a bitchin' tranny to mate up to a big six.
Those trannies are supposed to be able to handle ALOT of power and have a nice spread of gear ratios
(1st & 2nd are similar to G265, 3rd & 4th take the workload of 3rd gear, and 5th & 6th are similar to 4th
& 5th on the G265).

Alright, I'm done. It's time for bed.

Could be a cheaper alturnative than trying to find a M5 transmission. If you could get the bolt patern for the bellhousing attachment point, or see if that guy will do it, that will go a long way for more 6 speeds in these old E-28's! :)

Hey Raj,

I'm surprised that your search didn't take you down the Jaguar path. My e30 M3 originally came with a dogleg tranny, but, was replaced with a rebuilt US G265 by the previous owner. A while back I started looking for info on the doglegs and found a lot of the same info that you did. One of the other interesting conversions is for the Jaguar E-type 4 spd to Getrag 5 spd. BTW, when I found the info on the Volvo swaps I got my hopes up that there may be a cheap source for a dogleg G262 or G265 out there. Unfortunately it has yet to materialize.

I own a Brick and I can tell you from first hand experience the enthusiest Brick owners are every bit as dedicated as us. I haven't looked into any form of transmisson swaps for my DD the Turbo Brick, but my WAG says the Getrag M51 might be marginal for the M30 engined cars. This transmission was designed for use behind circa '70 B23 and B230T engines. The stock turbo engine make about 180HP, GrA NA cars are probably in the 200+HP range. IIRC, the G265 is a highly sought after box amongst some in the Volvo world.

Now that TT Supra Getrag looks interesting. I sure would like to see the bellhousing pattern.
