Start on #1 cylinder with the rockers on the "heel" of the cam (both cam lobes pointing down, lowest spot on the cam), rotate engine to the next cylinder in the sequence where the cam lobes point down and the rockers are on the low spot and keep going to the next cylinder in the sequence of the firing order until you are done. Valve clearance spec. (intake and exhaust) is .011" DEAD COLD.

Gee whiz, don't they teach math in school anymore? :D

1 inch = 25.4 mm.
.011" = .279 mm.

Use your metric feeler gauge that's closest to that number.

The real spec is .011" dead cold (and that came from a BMW employee, specificly a senior technical instructor) what is the real question?

as long as the vast majority of north amereican residents possess offset feeler gauges in standard measurements... the spec is .011"

I'm tempted to crank mine down to that on my B34... but have too many other things to do first.

B34 valve clearance should be .013" dead cold.

To his each his own. It is always best to start with factory spec then as time goes by you can adjust that to match what you want. I do mine a .010" cold, of course go with factory setting or the bently numbers.

So I put the feeler gauge between the rocker and the cam or the rocker and the valve?

Go with the valve side, later when you get real good go for the cam side.

I would agree with that UNLESS someone is trying to learn something. There are some VERY knowledgeable people on this board who have been around these cars a very long time!! In that case, there might just be a better way than the one we are used to! All it takes is an open mind and a willingness to learn...

I don't mind being quoted, but please read my post completely.

I said to go with the factory setting FIRST and then as time goes by, you can adjust them as you see fit. Each motor has it own personality, so the factory setting won't just do, that is where you adjust the valves to the smoothes and quitest that you can find.
