Ahh - Working out feels great!
In 2005 I decided to stop being lazy and actually work out and get buff like the rest of the college crowd.
Today I weighed in 147.1 lbs -- My average weight in 2004 was around 138-140. I've also been able to max out at 185lbs on the bench. Needless to say my confidence has skyrocketed and my girlfriend has been really tickled with the results thus far. Hell -- even her friend (Miss Teen NC 2003) complimented me on it.
I also began running again.. as I used to be on cross country and track. I want to be in tip top shape for spring break Look out Tampa, FL!
So has anyone here been working out and seeing results? Or did anyone work out in college and have stories to share?

Good for you! You are still young so ten pounds would disappear with just a three week layoff from beer! Last November I decided to get off my ass too and lose some weight. After balooning to a very unhealthy 289 pounds and having everything I did seem like the biggest chore it was time to do it now or die unexpectedly soon. I have lost 55 pounds so far and I am well on my way to lose another 30 before 5er fest. I have been working out every day and I feel like I am your age again! Fun, isn't it? Congrats to you, and I will warn the authorities that you will be going to Florida soon and to be on the lookout. LOL! By the way, my wife also lost 40 pounds and our whole life has changed,

In college I got into working out 1`st and 2nd year. I could not eat enough and was always hungry. Weights mostly. Gained about 12-14 lbs and felt pretty damn good. I had a good routine of 4-5 days days workout 2-3 days rest and partying (that is Friday- Sunday). I found that rest was where one could really make some gains and feel strong. Work hard for 3 months then take 1-2 weeks off. Working tears and rest repairs those fibers.
Got into running later and loved it. Ran some short races 5k and 5 milers and the like. Dropped a log on my leg and had an extreme bruise for about 4 months. Then I decided I needed to graduate and tuned in the exercise time for study time. Now I am working in an office and need to regroup.

Last year when I was a freshman we had Freshman Seminar. An easy "A" class with a bunch of other college freshman. One of the students -- Bobby - weighed in around 375lbs. He came up to me 2 days ago in the gym and was like "Whats up TJ!" -- I had NO IDEA who he was.
He was down to 205lbs! In about 1 year he lost 170lbs -- and had pictures of his progress. He looked COMPLETELY different! I told him to send his stuff into subway and tell him how much he loves the cold cut trios

I felt like running just a couple of days ago, I laid down until it went away.

i'm doing the same thing right now tj. trying to get in shape for spring break. i've only lost 6lbs so far but i've gotten my bench up to 260 and i hope to get back to the 315 i could once do pretty soon. Keep up the good work my man!
i'm working on the running thing but so far i cant get past about a mile before i need a cold beer.

I'm currently 6'4", and 275lb. I was 209lb in my first year of college, when I was playing baseball, and working out regularly. A badly torn rotator cuff sent me into some depression, and knocked me off the work out horse. Adulthood came along after that, and I was never back in the same shape again. I hovered around 235-245lb, which was OK. I'm a large build, and could carry it well. 2-3 days a week in the gym kept it a fairly lean 240.
Well, 2 years ago I herniated 2 discs in my back, and was off of work(and life!) for 8 months, awaiting surgery. I shot up to 295, as all that muscle converted to fat. Almost another year went by after my surgery before I went back to the gym on a regular basis. I rejoined Gold's Gym towards the end of last summer, and have been working out with a buddy of mine, who holds a degree in human kinetics, and is also a former college baseball player.
After about 3 months, I started to see, and feel some serious results. A few months later, I am just feeling better and better. My weight loss has plateaued, but that's fine. I'm stronger than I've ever been, and look fairly imposing at a muscular 6'4", 275lb! Still have about 20lb of gut to lose, but it will come off. My arms are now larger than my wife's legs, and my clothes fit tighter, but not because of fat.
Working out is a great feeling, especially when the results start to come. Sure, it can be painful, but well worth it. I'm sitting here with some burning triceps, and an aching chest, but in a couple days, they will both feel fine. We're on a 4 day cycle at the moment. Biceps/Back, Chest/Triceps, Legs/Shoulders, Cardio/Abs. I also try to do 30 minutes of cardio every day. Friday nights I play hockey from 11:30pm until 2:30am.
My business keeps my super busy, and I can't always eat healthy, or have a proper, full workout, but I try to stick to my program as best I can. Sometimes health it more important than work. Just an FYI, I'll be 29 years old on March 10.

During my not-quite-four-year stint in college, I went into the weight room twice, and both times were to look for a friend of mine that was supposed to play racquetball with me that night. I NEVER worked out a day in my life until I joined the AF.
I haven't worked out in months, so I'm back down to my weight and build that I was at when I entered the AF nearly a year ago. Damn.
I WOULD have been working out lately if they didn't keep putting us on 12-hour shifts, taking us off them, putting us back on them, taking us back off them. . .
Bastards. . .

I started working out in college. I was pretty small, 5'6" and around 130 lbs when I started, but strong for my size. A year later I was around 140-145, maxed bench press at 225 (without bouncing) and curled 120. The wrestling coach wanted me to work out with the wrestling team, would have been fun but with 20+ hours work and full class load, I didn't have the time.
I've only worked out on and off since then, so I don't have nearly the strength I used to. Still, with a bit of running on the beach here and there, and working out once or twice a week most of the time, I'm staying in decent shape. It doesn't get any easier, though.

I weighed 124 when I finished HS. 165 when I finished College and I am now up to 240. I've got to follow suit with some of you guys and start working out again. I used to play tennis (paid for first year of college) until a nagging stress fracture in my foot sidelined that for awhile. I hope to drop 20 by the fest. I need the energy back with a 16month old on the loose in my house.

I'm one of those weird runner dudes on a comeback. Ran competitively from age 12-22, then went cold turkey for a year after college.
At my best, I weighed 148-150 (at 5'9"), could bench 200, was running 80 miles/week and a 5k under 16:10 ... not that fast really but it was D3 and I was having a blast.
Now I'm 165, back up to 30-35 miles/week, and the 5k is back down around 18. Should be under 17 by the end of summer, I hope. Planning on tackling marathon no. 2 in the fall. Since starting grad school, I've made time to lift again too, but only 2-3 times a week.
Today was my first run back from a 10-day break for a hurt hip flexor. Frustrating, since just 2 weeks ago I cranked out back-to-back runs of 8 and 7 miles in 53:00 and 45:50, respectively. Should be geared up for a good racing season if I stay healthy.

I have a desk job, and I'm 43 years old and 6'2" tall. When we moved to SoCal in 1996 I weighed 245lbs. We gave our second car to charity and I commuted by bicycle to work. That was 6.75 miles each way, and the trip home included 1.1 miles of 7% grade. In six months I was down to 215lbs, and I stayed at 215lbs for the next three years, eating everything in sight, and I just got faster and faster. I used to love passing college boys going up that hill, riding bikes that cost 5x what mine cost, plus I had fenders and lights and luggage and no trick Lycra outfit color coordinated with my bike.
With a job change I stopped riding every day. My schedule, plus my distance from the office, seems to get in the way of that daily workout. Now I'm back up to 242lbs.
Three weeks ago I joined 24 Hour Fitness. (My company reimburses the monthly fee ) I have engaged a trainer to show me how to do it first, and I've been going 2x-3x per week. The routine so far is 30min cardio on the treadmill (142 bpm), then some resistance machines, then situps/crunches, then 30min "fat burning" (122 bpm). After I get a decent fitness base, I'm going to expand to free weights to improve my balance and coordination along with my strength.
My running gait can still be described as "lumbering" but I'm starting to feel a little better. I haven't dropped a waist size in my jeans yet or anything like that. But it'll come someday soon!

Bob,
My sister was the same way ... it took her months to get "comfortable" running, and she was overweight for most of her life so it was a big adjustment. But then *poof*, a year after she couldn't run 2 miles, she did a half-marathon in 1:50! Now, another year later, she is in pretty amazing shape and due to all of her yoga and stuff, her abs are much stronger than mine. And I'm only slightly ashamed to admit it. Good luck!
As far as pant sizes ... it's strange. Even when I didn't run for a year and gained 20 lbs (lost about 10 of those now), all of my clothes still fit more or less normally. I was less defined but I have no idea where I put the weight!
