hey guys, this is my first post. Great site. My family have been BMW fanatics for years now and we have our own little stable that include...
1984 e23 733i - been with us the longest.
1985 e28 528e - bought for $100 with 177km, interior swap, body and paint job in the proccess and will be on the road by the spring
1986 e24 635csi - my dads baby, alpine white on black leather recaros.
1992 e36 325i - plain jane auto bought in 04' with 120km.
We were intrested in a E28 M5 that is in the area. It has 277km (not miles) it was painted blue. origionally black/tan. My BMW mechanic knows of the car. he has never serviced it but has heard that the owner had problems idling and over heating problems. he is asking $7200ca. The body is in overall decent shape, not a garage queen by any meens and could use a body job.. and a paint job back to black.
The mileage scares me and Ive been informed a rebuild on one of these could cost upwards of $10grand, am I just getting myself into trouble with this car, or does this sound ok. I will try to link up the picture for you guys.
Thanks,
///Matt

Whatever happens next, the car won't increase in value. Paint/repaint/repaint?? I don't think you're going to end up with something that you want to keep for the long haul. The super sucking sound of money won't ever be recoverable. With a $6k paint job and a $10k engine rebuild... buy a decent one and have something that has the opportunity to retain or increase in value. This doesn't look like something that you want to get involved with.

Call me crazy, but I would buy that bad boy.
Why?
1. Because the people on this website (majority) would give their left nut for an M5 in decent shape
2. Because, somebody mentioned the value would never go up; likewise; the value will never go down for a car like that if, with the caveat that, indeed, it's an M5
3. If you can afford it, take a chance, you only live once--related to my second point, you wrench on it for a year and get out of it the same price you bought it for
4. Your escape route is that, the cool unique features on that car, in case she is a money pit, will part out for close to upwards of what you bought it for: Sport seats, lights, shadowline, engine even crappy condition, body.

Sorry to disagree, but even with a left nut to give, I don't really want an M5 that badly. I happen to like the 535is and find it a better daily driver than an M would be, mostly since I wouldn't have to sweat a $10K engine rebuild if I broke it. The M30 is plenty powerful for average street and occasional track use. All the cosmetics are nearly identical, or can be easily duplicated, on a 535i or 'is. We all know the unwashed masses would have a tough time telling a 535is from an M5 from all angles except the rear - and besides, the 'is comes in red! If I did stumble on a screaming deal on an E28 M5, I wouldn't be the first guy to have a back garage queen and another E28 for most days.
