I thought about recommending this, since we did this on IFSJA and tried this on Bimmernut, but it seems like not enough people would be on it at one time... unless we set up a once a week meet on there or something. Just an idea.

This was tried a couple of times when we first went to phpBB. Failed miserably.

Running chat sessions should be easier now as the site has grown quite a bit.

It will be the new forum for people asking why their hot air does not blow through the center vents, I can't wait.

irc chat works fine with our dieselperformance forum.

the so called elite is there, when forum can be slow, in irc we have realtime conversations.

mostly diesel talk, but lot of general talking.

im using Mirc for chatting

IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat, a real time BBS style of communication.
IRC is more a protocol, and you can use whatever client you like to access the host (e.g. mIRC is a client)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Relay_Chat

I could see it being useful, because conversations can be held in real time, chat or SMS style.

its a matter of getting people there.

I usually idle in a couple IRC chats with friends or for various tech subjects related to whatever I'm doing at the time. It could be cool, although it does sort of open the floodgates for idiots who'd rather ask questions than search.

im an ex irc junkie.

the problem that this community might have with the use of irc is one of two things

1) no useful information ever gets discussed on irc. it's purely social chatting

-or-

2) useful information gets discussed on irc.. in which case it is opaque to the rest of the board members, it isn't archived, and it isn't searchable.

What? it sounds like an AOL chat room to me. I assume they still have those. I haven't used one in at least 8 or 10 years though.

IRC predates AOL by a significant amount of time. I'm a bit surprised to hear it's still in use.

Matt sums up the chat session issue pretty well.

Frighteningly, I agree with him. OTOH, maybe we're reaching the saturation point for new information about the same old cars. When is the last time we generated some really NEW widely usable information? Have we already covered everything? Are we now merely the Keepers and Guardians of The Sum of All E28 Knowledge; our only function to tell Da Noobs, "Spell correctly, Search, and Ye Shall Find"?

Of course, if you want to chat, there's always facebook's new Groups function. You can even make it a secret group! We could have initiations, a secret handshake, and everything!

Interestingly enough, we do have an E28 Facebook group (which in case you forgot, you're already a member of, btw). It has more of an international vibe than this forum does, too. At 983 members, it's got a decent following.

If we were playing Counter Strike, Vent would make sense.
