What did you do to your E28 today?

Got the 4hp22 halfway out. Need to get a 17mm offset wrench for those torque converter bolts.

Got the auto shift knob swapped for a manual boot. No linkage yet.

Got the pedals 1/2 way swapped. Need to grab the pedals from the parts car and install.

Washed it.

Swapped out the old-style bottlecaps with their weather checked tires for a set of new-style e32 bottlecaps (Style 2's) with fresher rubber on them.

Got the windshield trim strips rechromed ghetto-style. Rear window strips are next. (Hat tip to Jake for the most excellent writeup!)

Masked off & painted one of the side mirrors. Thought for a long time about whether to stick with black or go with body color mirrors, and decided on black. It's what they were originally, and I think it looks more period-correct. You might disagree, but it's my car.

Bought monica a new clutch

When the previous one was only used for two weeks.

Ouch! How does something like that happen?

I got the grin factor hustling to the plumbing store in B6 II. It likes the wires from BB Shiftless, that I had swapped out , whilst chasing its elusive hesitation issue. I drove back, had a bite, then drove a mile down the street and picked up an 8' length of baseboard. I reclined the psgr''s comfort and got the entire piece inside the cabin.

Amazing what one can fit inside these cars; I've hauled 8' lengths of wood trim, pvc pipe & electrical conduit in mine too. Learned the first time though that it's best to leave the helpers at home.

Saturday: drove it (except with an open differential)
Today: Drove it carefully (rain in CA... wtf?) and washed it
Tomorrow: getting a quote on some vinyl wrapping the mirrors and yellow headlights.

I really like those seats! Were those custom upholstery or did you buy them off someone? How much were they?


They are custom but a local upholstery shop. All seats were about $1,700.00 w/ two tone Napa leather. (OEM E28 M5 seats.....because that's what my car is)

I'll bet one could dye their seats in this configuration for a WHOLE lot less money.

I sold my 88 325 cabrio and used the fund for the project. I just wanted a fresh start. Nothing smells like new leather.

Washed the road grime off it from a 1,100-mile trip, then drove it to the post office, parking next to a grey-blue 528e E28 that could use a little love. As I walked past it, I commented to the guy sitting in it "Nice car." He smiled, then noticed mine parked next to him and replied "Ooh, shiny."

Drove it on Kings Mountain Road and Skyline Boulevard with my friend who has a 5.0. KMR and Skyline(CA 35) are both windy mountain roads with some straights. It is a beautiful drive and I put about 80 miles of driving in the hills on the odometer.

You can find some videos of both roads on youtube. Maybe one time I'll do a ride along camera. It truly is a blast to drive on the road.

Got home and it was dark(ish) out but I still washed, polished, and vacuumed my car for the first time since I bought it on Friday. It is now prepped and ready for it's first day at my high school tomorrow.

Put in a new radiator. The upper hose connection broke off flush with the radiator since the plastic was sooo brittle. Luckily it finally broke loose in my driveway so I wasn't stranded.

Old radiator out in 15 minutes. Half hour to put the new one in, fill the system, and bleed it.

Lights owned me today. First, I couldn't figure out how to access my city lights/lo beams . Then, I bought 2 new H4's, only to realize they were wrong. Then I hooked up my (lighted) mirror, and it didn't work (bulbs are good). And my rocketlabs light delay wont work in my 04/85 m535i .

I did however fix my high beam that was out, and I was able to replace my citylight.

EDIT: just spoke to George about my light delay, it looks like it'll work after all!

Looks like it! I've been using a BMW LED flashlight, holding it in my mouth. Doesn't quite cut it, lol. Thought about taping it to a hat, but the brim would get in the way in tight spaces.

Took her up to Cypress Bowl on a very rainy Remembrance Day to find out exactly how well the new tires/wheels really do handle in a Vancouver monsoon - I'm impressed.

On the way, filled her up and threw in a bottle of fuel system cleaner because I'd dared to allow her to dip below the quarter tank mark the day before.

Very smooth. Very tight. Very nice. Both on the way up, and back down.

Yesterday I got in a box o' goodies from autohausaz, new headgasket kit, transmission seals, timing belt, tensioner, etc. in preparation for the head swap on the super eta. Also I bought another damned 885 head at the yard raising my total count to 4 including the b27 885 head on the super eta. I'm starting to think I need help. I think I may port and shave one of them for higher compression and run it N/A before I finish piecing together the turbo setup...

Oh, and not that it directly pertains to my e28, but it certainly explains why the engine hasn't been swapped yet: I finally passed a f*cking dynamics test. The class average (in line with my average) is about a 50/100 right now FML

Will post pics in eye candy Sunday afternoon. Once I monochrome the car next month, I will decide if I paint the style 9's white with polished lip or soft gold with polished lip.....decisions, decisions.....

1-Installed rear H&Rs.
2-Took off bottle caps and put 32s back on.
3-Fixed loose hood release cable, then broke it, then promptly broke the new one by tightening the bolts too much. WTF$#%&*&^*%.
So I'll have to "back yard" it til I can get another new one.
4-Finally got my front euro bumper mounts fitted right.
5-Ordered new wire, clamps for the euro bumper rubber, and a filter for the power steering.

Yesterday actually -- Determined that the ECU is flaking out on me again; drove it to work Friday morning, and after sitting with the sun shining through the windshield on the dashboard all morning it decided to run like crap when I drove home for lunch; didn't want to idle, black smoke out the tailpipe, running very rich. After things cooled off Friday (temps in the 30's) it ran fine; yesterday morning it ran fine until the interior got warmed up, then a little percussive maintenance on the dash over the glovebox got it acting right. It had the same symptoms last summer, and reflowing the solder joints cured it, but now it's back, so it's time to hit the Parts FS section to shop for a new ECU.

Last Sunday I performed an engine swap in my apt. complex parking lot. This week and tomorrow... I intend to finish this project in hopes that this engine is worth it.

I found out the hard way that the shop that milled my flywheel charged extra to pull the pins out & put them back. Heck, I'd have pulled them myself if I'd knowed that.
