accessing forum pages

Post by carnut »

i think the search function sucks. i always try different keywords but have limited success.

have taken to reading forums page by page. i started at page1 and going backwards, and page 5xx, and going fowards. trouble is, when i come back, i cant easily get back to where i was.
am i doing this the hard way, or could this be improved?

one other thing: i see posts where there once was a picture attatched, but the picture is no longer there. i think this is bad, and wonder if there is a preferred picture hosting address. one that will not shut down in the future. i know we cannot guarantee this, but is there anyway we could host them ourselves?

otherwise i love this site. thanks to all who contribute.

Use the google search, then.

As for picture hosting, it is up to the poster to choose the picture host. Those hosted by the e28-535i uploader don't go anywhere due to a generous gift from KillerPM. MyE28.com has absolutely zero control over where pictures are hosted, though, so if someone pulls it from their photobucket or flickr account, the link will come up broken. Such is life.

Try searching M5 by a particular author you KNOW has posted about their M5. For some reason two character words are ignored. Yes, google search is an adequate workaround but I've always wondered why phpBB chokes.

Way to be vague. How about giving us exact examples of the words/phrases you used?

phpBB doesn't consider 2 character strings to be keywords. When it indexes posts for searching, it catalogs keywords only. Therefore, searching for 2 character strings like M5 and O2 won't work in the built in search. 3 characters and up works fine for the most part.

As for the OP, I agree with Shawn. The built in search does have limitations, but generally does work. What specific search terms are you having trouble with?

yes. search by author i have tried, and liked.
cant recall exact examples at present.
when i choose my keyword(s) to use for a search, i am mindful of keeping the numbers of words to a minimum, in order to
maximize returns.
mostly get what i'm after eventually, but cant help but feel it could be easier.
yes i sound like a bitch!
thanks heaps gents
