You really don't need the light. You just need to know when its a good time to plug the scan tool into the plug- like when your mileage is low or if your engine isn't running well. It can be helpful though. But I will forewarn you that there were times when the CEL came on, but by the time I got the reader out the light was back off by itself and the ECU wasn't throwing any codes.
