I'm just looking to compare insurance rates with the rest of you e28ers.
What company?
How much do you pay every 6months (or monthly)?
What state do you live in?
What kind of coverage do you have?
How old are you?(makes a difference)

I have Triple A (AAA) -- They charge me $159 every 6 months -- thats $26.5 every month.
I'm in NC and 19 years old- and I only have Liability.

I'm looking to get collision with this months combination of 'close-calls' from stupid drivers. Do you guys think it's a wise idea?

'86 535i, Alpharetta, GA, 38 years old, no accidents, one speeding ticket in the last ten years, daily driver, 25,000 miles/year

State Farm, double the required liability coverage, towing, comprehensive and collision, ~$650/year. My deductibles are pretty low -- I should probably raise them.

As for whether you should keep comprehensive/collision on "old" cars, what I will tell you is that when the uninsured/fake insurance driver hit me, State Farm paid over $6K to have my car fixed in late '98 -- I will probably never pay $6000 worth of comprehensive/collision coverage in my lifetime, so I figure I'm already ahead.

If you own anything, consider max liabilty coverage. With today's lawsuit happy environment and jurys giving away loads of money to plaintiffs, it's good thinking. In addition, if you are carrying 25k of property damage and you hit the guy in the 75k MB....you may get to pay him back out of your pocket( cause you only carried 25k in property damage liability

I agree with Shawn , I carry comprehensive, but no collision. That way I am covered for the theft, fire, hit and run and the wacked out Ga deer that are everywhere. If I hit someone, I deserve it, I get to repair out of my pocket or part it out

Cinncinati Insurance
88 M5 , Ga rural area
46 years old no accidents, no ticket, multicar discount and yes the 89 635 is much less
no collision
250 comprehensive ded
100/300/50 liabilty
423 per year

just called the company and found that doubling the property damage limits is only about 5.00 per car. A 1 million dollar umbrella liabilty policy that covers it all is about 120.00 per year

'88 535is, I'm also 19 y.o.
no tickets

Last year I paid $1450 for liability only, the year before that $1550, for a few reasons: 1) I live in Massachusetts, 2) I'm 19, and 3) the state values my car at $3600 according to their depreciation equation. Yes, in one year I pay almost as much as I paid for my car.

Tjn182 (in Boone) and ShawnD,
Thanks for starting this thread...you beat me to the punch. Nice work.

I'm 39 y/o, married, and have 3 tickets in the past 5 years (90 in a 55 zone, 35 in a school zone - no kids in sight, rolling through stop sign), no accidents in 12+ years, neither of the 2 accidents I've been in were my fault (hit from behind both times), recently attended driving school, etc.

State Farm is charging me $49/mo ($588/year) for my "new" '87 535i 5spd (comprehensive, liability, and collision) "limited use" (less than 7,000 miles/year) car. I will probably drop the collision on this car TODAY.

Interestingly enough, my agent says State Farm's underwriters are cracking down on writing "classic coverage" (minimum of 10 years old, limited production vehicle) and so they recently REFUSED my request for said "classic" coverage on the '87 535i.

They had previously written my former '87 535is and '89 928s4 as "classics" Both were "limited production" cars...according to their reasoning. Get this insurance on the Porsche was only $26/month under the "classic coverage" (agreed upon value of $15k).

My '99 e39 528i sport 5M is ~ $62/month (~ $750 / year) as a daily driver comprehensive, liability, and collision included.

I'm not sure how this compares with others' rates/carriers.

Thanks,
Tim

Wow, most of you have seriously cheap insurance!

My 85 535i has comprehensive with a $1000 deductible, $1000000 liability, and no collision.

I'm 29 years old, and never had an insurance claim, even for a windshield. Also no tickets that effect rates.

Cost? $140/month, or $1680 per year.

1987 528e. 23 year old driver (in March). One wreck on the record. I think my tickets have managed to slide through my record.

$157 / mo for all of the liability only. I go through Progressive, but once this policy runs out in August, I'm running over to USAA. I hear I can get full coverage for under $100 / mo.

Shifty,
Smart move re: USAA. I have several buddies here in Gainesville who are former military, dependents of retired military personnel who swear by USAA for everything from credit card to insurance needs. Their customer service is supposed to be excellent too!

I didn't know anything about USAA until I PCSed here to Missouri. I've heard from one or two people that are younger than me by a couple of years, have horrible driving records, and pay less than $100 / mo. for full coverage! I just renewed my policy with Progressive, because I hadn't taken the time to research other insurance companies at the time.

I'm thinking if I can get more for less, why not, right? Liability is nice, but something that protects me from Bambi and hail with a relatively small deductible for under $100 sounds like a good deal.

I pay $165.00/month for full coverage including uninsured motorist protection for both my cars.

Maybe my age of 35 has something to do with it. I am with Farmers insurance.

TJ's thread about his recent accident.

I didn't get in an accident :) I've had some real close calls though.

And a correction -- I have USAA, i dunno why i said AAA.

Shifty, there is no need to wait to get cheaper insurance, they should reimburse you for the unused portion of your current policy. I recently did the switch and the money was back in my account within a couple of days.

Allstate Insurance
For my E28 I pay $27/month for PL/PD.
I'm 24 and as far as Allstate knows, I have a clean driving record.

Haygood: I worked IT for Cincinnati Insurance through late last year. I helpd develop the software your agent uses on their computer(if you live in OH, IN, MI, KS, or FL), other states are/were still under development when I left. There were a couple E28s in the lot everyday at work

OK Gang...just looked at the first bill for my '87 535i - bronzit car from State Farm.

Here's the detailed breakdown of charges:

$693 per year = Total Policy Cost or $57.66 per month (seems high!!!)

Bodily injury / property damage liability
(100k per person / 300k per accident)
Property Damage ($50k each accident) $105.51 per 6-mos

No Fault $ 31.70 per 6-mos
Medical Payments ($5k each person) $ 14.31 per 6-mos

$250 Deductible Comprehensive $ 15.49 per 6-mos
$1000 Deductible Collision $ 29.45 per 6-mos

Emergency Road Service $ 1.22 per 6-mos

Car Rental / Travel Expenses
(80% coverage) $ 7.31 per 6-mos

Uninsured Motorist (Non-Stacking) $ 58.60 per 6-mos
(100k each person / 300k each accident)

Now, I would REALLY appreciate advice as to how I should modify this coverage to increase my liability protection including property damage (if I hit a $179k M-B AMG CL65 for example) and increase my out-of-pocket costs if I were to cause the damage to
my e28.

Thank you,
Tim

You don't want to know what NJ residents pay.

I'm on a family policy (4 people, mom (over 50), dad (over 60), me (24), little bro (20)). Overall on the policy last 3 years: 2 tickets (my dad and little bro), 2 accidents (my dad not his fault, and little bro at fault). Myself and my mom are clean. $500 deductible on collision and comp, $300k/$500k/$300k in liability coverage, and uninsured motorist.
'02 E39, '98 Accord, and '94 325i are covered as full use vehicles, '86 M535i is covered as limited use vehicle.

Are you ready?
.
.
.
.
.
about $8,000 every year.

Roughly comes out to $1000 on the Accord and 325i, $1300 on the E39, and $600 on the M535i every 6 months.

And even IF we were completely clean, the policy would still cost around $6k every year.

NJ sucks.

Chris,
All of a sudden, I'm feeling richer for having moved from upstate NY to Florida :)
Thanks for the comparison pricing. I still wonder if I should UP my liability and drop my collision? Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Tim

Just had the liability discussion on another list I frequent. It was started by a pic of a wrecked (rear-ended) Carrera GT. WTF do you do if you rear-end a $450,000 car? Most standard liability limits top out around $100k. They can go after your house if an aggressive attorney gets involved.

Hmm, now that I'm buying a house I should think about upping my liability limits. I have the standard collision and comprehensive, pl/pd with 100/300/300 limits, and I pay $850/year on the E28 with State Farm. I added the beater GTI for $200 additional/year; pl/pd only. I have had 2 claims in the past 2 years (vandalism and theft), but my driving record is spotless. Well, one ticket 4 years ago, but that never hit the insurance.

While we're talking about insurance...does anybody know about insuring a car for like a 12 mile drive? I'm thinking about purchasing a 535i parts car, which is currently under no insurance and has the wrong tags. It's only like 15 mins from my house, and I would most certainly drive very carefully, but I don't trust some of the nuts running around here. I don't feel like gambling, so how do I insure the car for such a short time? Can anyone tell me anything about purchasing a car that won't be driven once it's bought? Do I get a salvage title or what? TIA!

Back when I was in the P/C business ( property insurance) in the state of Ga, they would cover you for 30 days w/o notification

Call your agent and see about an umbrella liabilty policy, 1 million bucks, under 120 per month here
