Re: Got schooled today...
I know how you feel. A new Escalade kept up with me through the middle of third in the 540. I pulled away pretty quickly after that, though.1st 5er wrote:...by a new Taurus SHO.

I suppose you were in the M5?1st 5er wrote:...by a new Taurus SHO.
Thats OK Sherman...some of these new cars are able to produce good acceleration.
I was in the 533 running into town on the freeway when a new BMW 135 (138? I dunno...it was fairly ugly, whatever it was) merged next to me. The guys' wife looked over as if to say "hey, look at that old BMW..." I gave a small acknowledgement, and dropped him like a bad habit up to about 85-90mph. He decided to give chase, and did catch me. By then, however, I had lifted and was exiting the freeway.
He wanted to show me he could (and would) follow an old BMW towards the 100mph mark. But thats all I gave him. We launched at about 50...and I had him to about 85-90...just wanted to show the "Respect your Elders" thing.
(And, my car was WAY cooler than his...so is yours...)

Musta been, I didn't know they made a 128...the boy had no heart, but he did have balls. And, he probably had a lot left if he stayed in it with his foot.scott s wrote:Yeah, those new SHOs haul ass.
TSMacNeil: Must have been a 128? A 135 runs a mid/high 1/4 mile. It's almost as fast as an e46 m3. I've been in a few and they pull like no other. My mom's 335i(same engine as 135) has no problem going 150.
I know I can't beat these newer cars, but I want them to think about it...as I lift.
PLUS- our cars just look better...
The SHO was a few cars back when I entered the freeway.
I saw him pull out and overtake the VW immediately behind me.
I've still got the 325 LSD in from The V & RTT trip, which result in some pretty high shift points.
I was able to stay in second through 80ish, and then third to 120.
After shifting into 4th is where he finally got me, the ///M was still pulling but not as hard.
Not sure what my RPM dropped to on the shift into 4th.
My exit was about a half mile ahead so I let off, with my tail tucked, and exited.
Any thoughts about the difference the stock 391 diff would have made in this, if any?
I know the SHO is advertised as a Twin Turbocharged 365 HP @ 5550 rpm V6, which is a bit more than my Dinan sprocketed and chipped S38.
Oh well, such is life...

Duh...WINNING! ^^^^^Retro Rust wrote:At least your car was hand built and museum worthy. That very same SHO will be crushed and recycled in 15-20 years. Not to mention that guy probably paid 40k for it, when it should be priced at 20k.
Sherman, many of these new appliances produce some stout numbers (when they're new) I'd love to see a rematch with a few turns in it. Also, I'd like to see that SHO run with you at 120 for a few hours...Lets see him run at all with the mileage you have...
The jackrabbit may win the sprint...but that's it.
Along these lines, I have decided that I need a TCD'd B35 at some point, but prolly not this car.

Uhh, you didn't "have him" at any speed, sorry. 300 HP (very conservative--they tend to dyno around 285 at the wheels) and 300 lb-ft of torque means that any 135i will crush any stock or lightly modded E28, even at their relatively portly 3400 lbs.TSMacNeil wrote:He wanted to show me he could (and would) follow an old BMW towards the 100mph mark. I'll give you the "cooler car" part, though.

Maybe...but he was still behind me...I describe that as "had".
You may describe it as you please.
I think I was clear about the prospects of outrunning these new cars...unless you are an "///M" unit and/or positive pressure, it ain't gonna happen except for a small sprint. Maybe he was an auto...maybe he held back for his wife....I dont know.
Thats what I had today. I did the "Elders" proud for the briefest of moments....and he had to rethink whether he was gonna have "it" or not.
Thats the way I like it.

My old Saab ('85 900 turbo, formerly Spinedoc's) was handily faster than my 535 in a straight line. With the aftermarket boost controller, it gave the M5 a pretty good run. That car was the ultimate NJ Turnpike machine--it was rusty and pretty beat, but quick, so it was a lot of fun to toy with the folks in luxury cars bombing the left lane. I'd move right, then accelerate as they passed and not quite let them by. Many an S500 was surprised to see me buzzing along in what looked like a junker at a buck-ten. Very fun. The M5 wasn't as good for such hijinks because it has to be in the powerband to change speed quickly, whereas the Saab was always boosting at 80+.TSMacNeil wrote:"Newsflash"
My Turbo Volvo will handily outstrip my 533 depending on the "race"...easily if it's straight. Don't try to turn though...and make it a short race.
That's my point.
My guess is that the 1-series driver was having fun, but not really trying, or maybe he wanted to hang back and check out your car. No matter.

Could be...all I wanted was a strong showing for a 26 year old BMW.
I had a similar experience with a guy in a late model (maybe e46) car...On surface roads with stop lights. I'm minding my own business, but I have fat tires and a Euro plate. He's posing on me at every light.
We pull hard off every light. Can he beat me? Yes. Does he pull away? Yes. Does he ever "leave me"? No.
I'm guessing his car is $45-50k...and it's (of course) stock.
I bought mine for $1900 and put $2000 in it mechanically.
$45-50K vs $4k....and he leaves wondering after every light.
I love it.

It's tough to beat an E28 for fun/dollar. E36 M3s fit that bill now, too, 'cause you can pick them up for under $10k.TSMacNeil wrote:Could be...all I wanted was a strong showing for a 26 year old BMW.

I know.
I'm seeing a real comparison with the e34 I just bought for my wife. The M50 TU has more power than my B34. Its smoother than my B34. And I'm not sure which would win a 0-60 race....maybe the 525i. But driving the 533 is SO much different.
The comparison isn't totally fair as I have a better suspension on the 533...but that M50 e34 gives it a run....and gets high 20's/mpg
And I paid $2500 for it.
I guess my thrill is getting the bang for a fraction of the buck with the right car.

There's just so much here...
Sherm, would the 3.91 made any difference??? Hell yes! He might have still pulled you, but with a diff ratio like the 3.25 it's like bringing a knife to a gunfight. The mid 70's to late 80's was arguably BMWs era. They were high on technology and early on FI, early on feedback FI and early on full engine management, not just FI, ie Motronic. But others have taken some lessons and even BMW has ramped it up some, I mean my non M E36 is in the same neighborhood as your M5 in numbers. Now that others have figured out performance and smog, it's a whole different ballgame. Not to diminish what an E28, M5 is and was in it's era, near exotic car performance in a 4 door sedan with a warantee, nor 533s being not only the fastest 4 door sedan sold here and one of the longest lasting engines too. But as has been mentioned, there are (virtually) no first gen Taurus's left, no second gen ones either. Kinda says something doesn't it, especially since the collectors car market here in the US has had a decidedly domestic bent.

This situation relates back to previous topics on older cars. They have personality and driver involvement.
New cars are so insulated and nannied by computers.
My neighbor bought a rat-bag 1991 Miata the other day, just for the hell of it. He's kinda a country guy, has a truck, a Harley, and his unmarked cruiser (he's a police detective), and has owned Corvettes and other secondary cars. This cheap, beat-on Miata has put a big grin on his face. Even more than the Corvettes have done for him. I've driven a few Miatas over the years, they're like go-carts with convertible roofs. You can't help but get a shit-eating grin on your face when you drive one- just like when you drive a go-cart. In a Miata, when you're doing 45MPH, it feels like you're doing 70. It's not about how much power the car has, or who you can beat. It's about how much fun you're having when driving it.
No matter how much money you spend, or how tricked out your car is, there's always someone faster. So if your car is a personal means of competition with other people, you'll never be satisfied. If your car is for putting a smile on your face because of what it does for YOU, then you can reach automotive Zen. The E28 rewards the driver with a high level of man-machine interface, like a Miata, E30 M3, or many other cars of that id. Sheer driving pleasure ("Hey! Is that Lexol dripping from the headliner of your car?" "Nope. That's sheer driving pleasure.") (Sorry), is why you seek open country backroads on an early Sunday morning.
And while one can get this to various degrees in newer cars, the older ones are just better at it.
Independent of financial value:
Would you rather a 2011 Ferrari 458 Italia, or a 1985 Ferrari 288GTO?
Would you rather a 2011 Corvette ZR1, or a 1967 Corvette L71?
Would you rather a 2011 BMW 535i, or a 1988 BMW 535i?
Make your own comparisons. But I'd take the latter in those three.
There's my 2 cents worth.

Not much to add, except I can't help but smile when these guys who either paid $+50K for their car, or make payments of +$700/mo stage up to me in my 26 year old crate that needs paint....especially if they have their little chalupa with them.
I'll drive my '84 533 any day over my '95 525i if I'm honest....and I do. They're both great cars...and if my wife ever thinks she needs a newer car, we are not getting rid of the 525...we may lose the Volvo.

Oh...and my next car shall be even older than the cars I have now.
I'm about to (reluctantly) give my '88 super to my in-laws. The payback (that my wife doesn't know about yet) is I'm going to get an '02 for myself. It was the BMW I first fell in love with when I was in high school.
It will NOT be stock. It WILL be red. It WILL be loud.

Tim, you're just a little bit late. Not red, but quite nice:
