AWD? The 911 Turbo does a good job.

I was going to say the AWD Taurus SHO is a pretty badass entry level luxury sedan. And although I love RWD, I wouldn't mind an AWD car.

Kohler, I definitely know adults who have gone well over 160 mph on open road. On the way to bimmerfest, we were cruising at about 110mph for the first couple legs of the drive, a couple e28/e30/e24 guys maxed out their cars. While their were newer cars going well over 150, I know a kid who took his modded e92 335i over 180 and I was in a 335i that went 150 on that drive too, and I didn't feel unsafe in that car at all.

Edit: I live 1/2 way in between San Jose and San Francisco in a pretty upbeat area and within 5 minutes from my house there is a patch of road that is PAINTED to show a perfect quarter mile and has been there for years. It's a relatively populated road during the night but there is no one there at night and I've seen kids line up on the 2 lane road to race. I wouldn't straight up race someone there but to measure the quarter mile I compared my trap speed on an actual drag strip to my trap speed on the road. It's a long straight with a hill on both ends to slow the cars down which ever way you are going and there isn't much more than 5/10 feet on each side of the road before you find bushes but it's not a sketch place to be.

Just so we're clear...and Chris knows this...
I do not make a habit of driving around at over 100mph...and I certainly don't endorse it.
I make a living going much faster than that, so at a minimum...it's just a "number" to me.
I have, however, seen myself engaging in a quick test of "spirit" on the road....and my travels on the road have gotten longer recently.

That shitty Ford will be part of a Kia in 23 years, so you obviously have the superior (although slower) machine.

All to beat a car that costs today what our cars cost 25 years ago. Ha.

To the OP, believe it or not, automobiles have come a long way in a quarter of a freaking century. And Ford really doesn't build a terrible car. Just be happy you have a car that you enjoy, that's really all you can ask for.

No, Thank You.
I'm happy with it just the way it is.
Well, maybe not totally, I'll be swapping the 3.91 back in at some point in the future.
But, I may try a 3.46 first, just for grins. :)

The only races I've done were with crappy japanese cars and that's only because people at school thought my car was a piece of shit. Light to light I've beat a Nissan 240, Mitsubishi Eclipse, Subaru Impreza (not the wrx or sti), riced out Honda Civic, and this ones not Japanese, but a Ford Focus that a kid had who thinks he's one of the best drivers out there. I love the fact that our 25+ year old cars can beat some of the newer cars. They're just amazing cars.

Im looking through the post and see one about a Jackass driving like an ass drunk or not at unsafe speeds get ripped apart, which is justified. Then read a post about a guy doing over 120 racing on the highway. I've been guilty in the past it just cracked me up alittle. There's a company out of Illinois that installs some bolt on's to the new SHO's and there doing high 12's in the quarter.

Regarding the SHO, I remember driving the first generation SHO around 1990 or so (it was made from 1989-1991). I had owned my first E28 since 1988 and was completely hooked. But I had heard so much about the SHO that I had to see whether I had forsaken American cars forever by mistake. I went to the local Ford dealer in Worcester, MA for a look-see.

This platform, if you recall, unlike the current AWD model, was a front-engine, front-wheel drive behemoth. I remember the salesman took a real snotty attitude with me because he probably realized immediately that I had no intention of buying. I test drove a used one, a couple years old with maybe 20K miles on it (my 1983 528e was approaching 100K at the time). Aside from the fact that the horrendous torque steer made for a terrifying launch, everything about the car already said "old and tired". What a disgrace of a car, and what atrocious longevity. But it went fast in a straight line, if you could keep it pointed straight.

Regarding "bad" behavior on public roads, thank you, at least half of you, for not judging me. There is an expressway near my home that is a haven for traffic stops. All day long the cops are out there balancing NYC's budget. But at night, especially real late, it's a fun road for a brief blast. Well at one exit they have a portable road sign with a radar unit on it. One night I noticed that it changed from the normal words on it to my speed! I guess I passed some threshold that caused it to record my speed, or at least announce it. I was intrigued because I wanted to know if it could display a third digit. Well, I am happy to report it does, which is cool because I really like to know what speed my E28 is going, and it's a nice way to calibrate my speedometer on a regular basis. :)

We've had our differences but we may have these two things in common -- opinion of the old Taurus SHO and as a native NY'er myself, I may know the exit to which you refer. Care to share to confirm? ;-)

Steve and Ray,
Oh yes, I'm sure I know the roadway of which you speak. I used to drive it too when I moved north of NYC. Is it the TSP by chance? I also spent a lot of time and money commuting on the NYS Thruway sans radar detector because I knew their haunts and hideouts (circa 1992-1998).

Since we're talking about the vintage Yamaha-powered Ford SHO, I thought you guys might like to see this story and hilarious clip from Conan O'Brien's Tonight Show debut. Hilarious!

Now Sherman...if you'll remember, I chased you and your e28 ///M5 down in my lowly (but 13-year newer) 2002 e46 325iT Sport (replete with 5MT, open diff, Dinan software, UUC strut and sway Barbarians, BBS RCs) on the "Back of the Dragon (Hwy 60 in West VA) during RTT2011. It is hard to compare the suspension design of a car penned in the 1970s with one from the mid-1990s. At any rate, the only reason I didn't get around you is you were all over the road (NASCAR / moonshiner-style) protecting your turf as "king of the hill." Ahh but we had fun that afternoon, didn't we? ;) :haul:

NOTE:
My apologies...just realized I bumped this 1-year-old thread after Sherman had referred to it in a recent RTT2012 thread.

Hey.

Nope, not the Taconic, although that is a lovely road.

Perhaps the statute of limitations ran out. Whatever... the speed sign hasn't been there much in the past year...

It was right in New York City... the Clearview Expressway. When there's no traffic, it's great. Short - the whole thing may be 8 miles long - but great nonetheless...

Regards,

Funny, even though it's been a year, the driving style sounds DISTURBINGLY familiar. Day three chasing sia down the hill? Hmmmmmm
And furthermore...
Day two to the casino, sherman... Those stoplight drags...

I think you need a short shift kit. Or maybe you were changing the radio station... Sure seemed to me as if i was pulling on you... I know that is NOT POSSIBLE, if you read the badges...
