The Chevron station owner offered me an 87 Peugot 505(?) for $300. Said it overheated and likely blew a head gasket...who knows what else.
As I walked around the car, it struck me that it has a pose very similar to the E28 (gasp!). I've never thought much of the French cars, but I always thought they looked interesting. I know it's a slow dog, and a cheesy ride, but what do you think of going thru the car and just using it as a beater?
Anybody know of a "good" Peugot site? (is that an oxymoron?)
Cloth seats, dash cracks, a little dingage on the side, but over all, it looks ok. Clearly the inside is a tripper's paradise! The "ergonomics" of the car are.....shall we say.....byzantine??
Anyway, whadda think?

Well, it would be interesting. There was a late 90's 405 at the yard last time I went. it was actaully a pretty nice car. white with red leather. 5 spd. Had a really nice stock MOMO wheel (which I grabbed). I would drive that car, but I would never want to have to maintain it.
I think the 505 does have a slight look-a-like to the squareness of an e28, and I have seen some pretty mean looking 505's, but....gulp.....it's still a French car no matter how you look at it.

That might be the most expensive $300 you ever spent. That is if it turns out to have more problems, big and little, that you might not be able find until you fix the head and get it running.
How are parts priced, any special tools?
There seems to be a good infrastructure of BMW culture around: repair shops, parts people, and knowledge base etc. I don't think I have ever seen a Peugeot repair shop or dealer. And you know the e28 already.
Although, if the Peugeot has bosh stuff, there might have similarities to the BMW in all the auxiliary stuff.
If you want a beater I have a Saab for you.

Tom, I know you'd enjoy a beater car that you could drive the daylights out of ("drive it like ya stole it!!!" - Tom Rougeux ). But really, I think it's been so long since you've had an e28 that it's getting to you. If you have plans to get an e28...you might as well wait for one, right? The car would be fun, but the cost to make it run well may or may not be expensive, you could spend way more than you imagined you would.

I too liked the look of the 80s Puegots that made it to the states. There was one model that looked really byzantine (i.e., old-school) and the more modern (80's modern) model that was the 505, I believe. They always caught my eye but never my wallet. Besides the problems inherent in the design(s), the BIGGEST problem Peugot had in the states is that their dealer service network (and perhaps quality) was never up to par. I remember speaking with the parents of several friends when I was in h.s. and college about their 505 experience. It was summed up like this...."I actually like the car but no one around here knows how to work on it and sourcing parts is a PITA." Tom....just PayPal me the $300 and I'll send you 6 e28 metric alloys with newish TRX Michelin tires. You can put them on your e28 when you find one and really enjoy that 80's feel.
