I'm riding an '86 528e. I was trying to join that BMW owners circle just for kicks. I put in my VIN from my insurance card, but the BMW site said "Your VIN does not match our database." I'm guessing a typo, since my car is also registered a 578e, bet you never seen one of those? So I'm wondering where on the car I check my VIN?

Read it t.hrough the bottom of the windshield on the driver's side of the dash. Also on tags on the inside of the fenders

Your car is pre 88, so it will not have VIN tags on all the panels, only on the dash, possibly on the passenger side strut tower (never owned a US 5 Series, only Euro) and also if you pull back the hood seal that is on the top of the fender, you will find it there.....

Thanks for the fast replies. I have no idea where they got that VIN they put on my insurance card, it is totally diffrent from the one on my card. Only the first 4 letters are the same. I didn't fill out the paperwork for my insuance, so I have no idea. Can anybody guess why?

Are you sure your insurance card isn't a state registration number? If it is supposed to be your VIN, you'd better get it fixed before you need to make a claim. Insurance companies love to deny claims for such things as, "Well, that's not the car we agreed to insure!" %)

FYI, VIN stands for Vehicle Identification Number, so VIN is vehicle identification number number. Just like an Automated Teller Machine machine, etc... It doesn't bother me, but for some reason I seem to always notice when people say something like ATM machine. :D
