6500+ in 1st , hit 2nd and was pushin he pretty hard when I noticed a flicker of a yellow warning light on the lower left of the instrument panel (between the fog light indicator and the high beam indicator).I didnt have a chance to see what it said as I was paying attention more to the road. I have never seen that before and the Bentley doesnt say exactly what the warning light is for so Im wondering, what it is for?

BTW, I dont push her too hard as I use her as my daily driver but WOW, she did hook-up real nice.

:D

Spark,
Just looked at my 87 535i U.S.-spec and Euro clusters....did not see anything in that spot for either of them. Hmm...now you have me puzzled. Can't imagine what it is....
Check with ChrisG. Keep us posted....

I have an instrument cluster in front of me. There are two yellows to the left. One is EML. The other does not have any lettering but is between the hi beams and fog indicators.

Threeshifter,
What does EML refer to? Emergency Malady Lamp? No, seriously...what does that acronym stand for?
Thanks,
Tim

I do not know what EML means. I just happen to have an instrument cluster lying about and that is what is in there. I think that the cluster in my car has the same but no bulb behind the EML film

It sort of boggled me when I posted that message because I have never heard of it. Could it be some secret German thing that we do not get over here?

EML = Engine Management Light

However, I do not believe that e28s have these. It is a feature of newer cars.

Could that light come on to indicate when the rev limiter activated?

Perhaps, although my eta hits the rev limiter every once in a while and I don't get a lamp. Not sure if the motronic for an M30 would be different in that way.

It quite possibly could have been a flicker of light. although, I did find it a bit coincidental that I saw what I thought a warning light when I entered deep into the RED zone. :? :?

Are there any volunteers that are willing to run their car to redline while looking for this mystery light?

I've bumped into the rev limter on two 87 535i cars. Neither displayed a light of any kind. Having had the cluster out of both of those cars, I can also say that there is no light in the cluster at that location by default to begin with. Logically, if there IS a light there, it should turn on with the cluster check that happens when you turn the key to ON (every light turns on for a couple seconds). If nothing pops up then, I'd be pretty confident saying it was a figment of his imagination or some trick of the lighting.

Not to disagree but that being the case, why doesnt the EML labeled light (to the right of the high beam indicator) light up during this time? :?

Still quite possibly figment of his imagination or some trick of the lighting :) :D :) :D

My car hits the rev limiter way too easily, but I've never seen any suspicious-looking lights while it is doing so.

However, I might need to install a shift reminder light... :)

Ok, I gotta chime in and say that I'd be the first volunteer to peg the needle in search of the "mystery light"!!

Now, all I need is a fiver.

Anybody? Anyone? Buhler?

I looked at my bad clusters (4) and they all have a blank yellow covering between the fog and high beam positions. There is no bulb mounted on any of these. If a bulb were inserted I have no idea what would light it.
The far left position has opposing arrows on green, looks like for turn signals but not used on our cars. Then the fogs, mystery yellow, high beams, Yellow with EML (I don't know what that means either, but no bulb in this posiotion),and then a red check engine indicator (again unused with no bulb.

Now for my question.
The tachs on these cluster read max of 5K, 6K, 7K.
I believe the 7K tachs are for the 535 and the 5K was for the eta. Was the 6K for the super eta?

Motronic 1.0 had no such sillyness. My m5 lives at redline and there is no "light" to tell you you've arrived.. you _know_ it :)

The factory redline is 6900 with hp peak at 6500. I've seen 7400 rpm out of a chipped S38B35.

Look, when you actually hit the limiter under acceleratino, the car violently jerks because its a hard fuel cut.

also, when you exceed the limiter under rev matched down shifting, there's no light either :)

Sure! $3500 and mine is yours! :) Since it's an eta, the tach needle'll be pegged in no time! :D
