Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Post by m-racer »

Posting a couple of days early as I am off to VA for the holiday and wanted to wish all of you a great Thanksgiving. It has been a tough year for many and I keep scratching my head on the woes that face our country. All that said, there is a long list of things to be thankful for and I plan on lifting a glass to each and every one of them that comes to mind. I am in charge of the wine and beverages at this year's celebration and have attacked my assignment with great zeal :) . To my Canadian friends, I am sorry for not remembering that your celebration of Thanksgiving was in October. Happy TG, albiet late. Best wishes to all. Travel safe, eat and drink well and enjoy your friends and loved ones.

May you be safe enough for the distracted driver
sharing the road with you.

May past sorrows bring focus
to all the joys in life.

So that we all may have a nice long list of things
for which to be thankful.

Happy Thankgiving,

Thanks for kicking off the holidays with such a nice message Tim... spot on! :)

I hope everyone has a safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday.... nothing like family, friends, food, and football.... and, per my wife, shopping on the days following Thanksgiving day... she with my daughters will be on their own, as I'll be staying home

Great and heartfelt message Tim!

Thank you. I would like to return the thoughts and hope you and your family the very best.

As for the rest of you! What the heck would I do without you? In the last three years this place has gone from a new forum for me to my second family! I enjoy my time, and friends here, squabbles and all.

So with that, I wish everyone and their families here on MyE28.com The very happiest, and safest holidays.

Also, Git 'em ready guys, cuz the driving season will be here before any of us are ready!

Mum and sibs and grands are celebrating at the old homestead for the last time. Kinda bitter sweet, but we got Mum into assisted living before the place did her in. Who knows, maybe my big sister will move in. Every body is bringing something.

Thank you. I wish you all a great Thanksgiving and weekend. I am fortunate enough to work midnight to 6am on Friday morning watching idiots shop and save an extra 5% over normal person hours.

Best wishes for a safe and pleasant Holiday to all. I'm thankful for the friendship and knowledge shared here.

The Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of every November. The holiday was set by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939 (approved by Congress in 1941). Earlier it was the last Thursday in November as was designated by the former President Abraham Lincoln. But sometimes the last Thursday would turn out to be the fifth Thursday of the month. This falls too close to the Christmas, leaving the businesses even less than a month's time to cope up with the two big festivals. Hence the change. But irrespective of the date of celebration the Thanksgiving Day has been observed as the national holiday since the regime of Lincoln.

Several Presidents, including George Washington, made one-time Thanksgiving holidays. Although the demand for making it a regular national holiday came in from various quarters, but of little impact. In 1827, Mrs. Sarah Joseph Hale began lobbying several Presidents for the proclamation of Thanksgiving as a national holiday. It didn't see success until 1863 when Abraham Lincoln finally made it a national holiday with his 1863 Thanksgiving Proclamation. So it was Lincoln who resumed the tradition. And it has continued to the present days. Probably the last Thursday of November was set by Lincoln to somewhat correlate with the anchoring of the Mayflower at Cape Cod, which occurred on November 21, 1620 as per the modern Gregorian calendar. To the Pilgrims who used the Julian calendar it was November 11.

Best also to those retailers like Chris who have a busy workday ahead. We hope you are so busy that you can give a part-time job to some young person in need.

Matt - thanks for posting the facts about Thanksgiving. Neat to read some history.

That said, whoever writes copy for theholidayspot.com wouldn't last 5 minutes here posting questions and commentary. In their celebration of Thanksgiving facts, they've utterly butchered the written English language!

Better known by her married name, 'Sarah Lee' she went on to make a fortune in the pumpkin pie business. :D
