Euro 535i LS Turbo Build Thread - 7/10/19 Dyno update

Post by T_C_D »

Another move, another winter, another build.

Moved back east. Less than 150 miles from Sweeney's! Old timers no what this means!

Towing the car to Sweeney's next weekend. Engine arrived this morning.

Image

Here is the current plan:

Engine is a 2007 L33 all aluminum 310/335 in truck form. This engine is known as the 5300 HO and has some goodies from the factory. It has ls6 heads and valve train. slightly higher CR at 9.9 to 1 and a hotter cam than the other 5.3s.

We'll be installing new factory mls headgaskets and ARP studs. Otherwise the engine will remain stock. A BBK intake, 50lb injectors, early Corvette LS1 fuel rail, and f body throttle body will all be used.

Peter is providing the MS3 and flying lead harness. I'll be terminating the harness.

The t56 should arrive next week. Clutchmasters will provide the clutch kit. Hurst shifter. 346lsd is enroute.

Planning on a single turbo in the short term. We'll look at building prototype twin manifolds if space allows and bring them to production next year. Will be using a T04S, 67mm billet wheel, journal bearing, P Trim and .96 tang housing.

Plan on running 6-7psi for 450/500 to the ground.

Damn....what a deal. My heads cost more than that. For that price, you can blow them up all day long and twice on Sunday.

Beats the hell out of BMW prices ;)

I started doing a single turbo 5.3l HO on a mustang I had a few years back, it's amazing what kind of power can be had from the research I did. Good luck Todd, this should be one hell of a fun trip.

I have a buddy who is doing a similar swap into a firebird in the Rockford area, he has the engine in place with the piping done. He used flipped and slihtly modified mustang 5.0 headers to a single huge turbo setup. Really spiffy looking the way he did it.

Made a few tweaks to the build plan. Bought a LS6 cam and double valve springs. Also found used billet fuel rails. The power potential is getting stupid. Based on my research the engine is going to start out at about 340rwhp n/a!

ClutchMasters was able to build me a flywheel/clutch combination using a 12" clutch. Considering the m30 clutch is only 9.75", the 12" clutch with the organic disc should be capable of holding at least 600rwtq.

Had to delay transporting the car to Sweeney's for another week or two.

Getting started soon.

You're making the m30 seems so passé. Sounds like a fun build there.

It's not going to sound like that through the turbo. We will definitely be tuning the exhaust for just the right sound level but it'll be more muted than your car. I am sure my cam is smaller too.

Day 1

Travel 140 miles to Sweeney's.

Image

Test fitting with foam block.

Stripped all the truck parts off the L33.

Ugly on the outside but like new where it counts!

So great to be back at the lair building an e28! Even better this time with Harper old enough to help out!

Based on my math, my L33 with the late LS6 cam and BBK intake should have a minimum of 375bhp with stock vette exh manifolds. That's a great starting point!

Based on all of my m30 experience, the VE increases enough with boost that .5 bar boost usually gives 1.7x base power.

Math says .5 bar boost will equal 640bhp or there about. Wouldn't it be nice if the math played out correctly?

If it does....what about your DS, U joints, half shafts, diff mount, trailing arm mounts....etc. etc? You are going to find many weak links when you start to hook with that much HP.

Driveshaft/ujoints will be built to support 800hp. I don't see any issues with the rear suspension of any of it's mounting points. It's all new and reinforced. I am feeling good about the ability of the axles to take the power based on what e34 guys put through stock axles.

It'll be fun if something breaks. Just be another product we can bring to market.

Looks like you have it well covered. Lets hope there is not any breakage during our "king of the hill" race ;)
