Just finished up with the subaru rebuild. Rockauto.com sent me the wrong timing belt tensioner, Napa sent me the wrong radiator, but was I ever worried? Well, yes. Quite a bit, frankly. However in spite of all this, we just took it around the block, and it felt great. It threw a CEL, which turned out to be a cracked PCV tube, which was promptly replaced with a section of a spare M20 breather tube I had lying around. Apart from that and a bit of valve tick, the engine purrs like a kitten. The valve shims are on order, should show up in a week or so to finish the build. The only thing that's questionable is(are?) the spark plug wires, which will also be replaced when the shims come in.

If 4 years ago you told me that I'd be doing a block-up rebuild of any engine, I'd have slapped you. Let alone a subaru engine. We play the hands we're dealt I suppose.

All I can tell you is that I've had half a pint of scotch and I felt like sharing. Is it worth bumping the subaru thread? I may just go back and edit my last post with an update w/o bumping, that should be okay.

duh da duh da duh da da Crude attempt at the Peter Gunn Theme. Put a storm door on the tent I put up to R+R the clutch in my Ranger..The clutch is like a Torqueflite with a bad pump. It takes almost a minute to engage.

Yesterday the weather forecasters were talking about a chance of 3-5 inches of snow by Friday night/Saturday morning. I woke up this morning to ~6" of fresh powder this morning. Nice surprise.

I really can't complain though; it's late January and this is the first snowfall we've had this winter where I've had to break out the shovels. Our Golden* Christmas was a little dull. And weird.

Yup. Doors are stoopid heavy. 1.5 inch door glass. According to the engineering info, the windshield weights 91 lbs. Oh, and the rear windows are non operatonal.

Wifey is a Glutard. Not celiac, though it runs strong in her family. She really misses real Toll House chocolate chip cookies. Tonight she tried a chocolate chip cookie pie with chick-peas peeled and ground as one of the substitutes for the flour. Not horrible. Even the kids are eating it.

The problem with vegetarian and vegan diets are it's really hard to make tasty, appetizing foods. Not impossible, and I think they're getting better, but very difficult. I had some marinated tofu many years ago that wasn't too bad, but the regular stuff is awful. The marinated stuff probably had so much salt in it that it wasn't any better for you than meat.

(random memory) The big John Morrell packing plant has been a fixture in Sioux Falls for a long, long time. When I was a kid they would give tours; I went through it a few times on school trips, and they'd give everyone a cold hot dog (beef frank?) at the end of the tour. There were always some kids who couldn't finish theirs. I could never understand why. The smell of hot dogs in the package always reminds me of those tours.

The guy who gave the tours was a buddy of my dad (dad worked there for 42 years) and was quite a character. He could whistle like nobody else, and would whistle a tune as the tour went to the next department; that was the warning for the guys to tidy up a bit for the tour. The warning didn't always help though; on one of my trips through the kill line there was a bunch of freshly dead cattle hanging by a back leg on a conveyer line, but one of them was still kicking and bellowing as we came in. Left quite an impression on a bunch of grade schoolers.
