How would a S38 powered e12 not be "unique"? BMW produced a e34 M5 touring, so its not like your breaking new ground there. The M7 idea isn't unique either as BMW SA produced a S38 powered 7, only in a E23.

Now if you want to talk about "Modifications in conflict with original BMW styling" lets look at your E32 idea. The E32 was designed to be a slow moving, quiet, uninspiring large luxury pig. Get the idea that a loud and fast Motorsports engine doesn't quite fit this description? An e12 is ten thousand times the drivers car that a e32 is and even had a Motorsports version avaliable at one time. I think a S38 and e12 can gel together quite nicely.

1. Yes, the M7 has been done but not in e32 form (that I'm aware of.) And "uninspiring large luxury pig"? Please. Isn't the e32 just the big brother to the e34? Who says they're designed to be "slow moving"? And didn't the Alpina folks think the platform was worthy of some tweaking?

2. While the S38-equipped e12 would be somewhat unique, as has been pointed out in this thread, it has been done before.

3. The SPHOBA citation is a joke. Its injection into this thread was intended as nothing more.

I don't understand what's so hard about fixing a couple of issues. I dont get why everyone wants to kill the E34 M5. Drive the 535 everyday and fix the M5 when you get around to it. Or, better yet, sell it to someone who will. The car is obviously not a good fit for you, so move on. Don't kill it for no reason.

I am DDing the 535 and loving it, until tomorrow.
My son-n-law called telling me his Tahoe crapped its rearend and they need a loaner,
so Snob will get to their house after this post, and tomorrow I'll be back in the E34 ///M for a few more days.

The car is actually a good fit, I like it a lot, but the swap kinda/sorta fits into some longer range goals related to stable occupants.
And, I'm not certain this opportunity will present itself again. That said, it's death, if it comes to that, will not be for "no reason".

IMO, it doesn't matter what's 'been done'. Everyone would be surprised what's been done to all of these older BMW models the past 30+ years. Keep in mind that not every BMW enthusiast who has a 'unique' BMW is on the internet/forums.

What matters the most is what you would enjoy driving and appreciate the most. It appears your love for the E12 is inseparable so my vote is to go for it and give that 'ol E12 a Motorsport heart. I can assure you that you will fall in love all over again.

On a side note, keep the 528i badge. No ///M badges or Motorsport colors anywhere. It seems to add some form of mystery in certain occasions.

3161 pounds according to an '80 owners manual. 79 used a different standard and was listed as heavier. It's probably slightly heavier than a 533, no power seats, no ABS, drivetrain was nearly identical, at least for weight purposes. Glass the same, doors interchangeable, etc. Metal was slightly thicker in some places such as seats, but that doesn't add much.

2nd - Thanks Mike. I was looking at and linked to the '80 models built for Europe and picked up the curb weight for the 518 5 speed.
