Re: 190e 16v, Houston.
190s could be had with a stick, but it wasnt the same trans as the 16v's had. so, surely the bulk of the parts are bolt in.. pedals and so on, but if you want the correct trans, it might be tough to find. though for the price delta between this car and 22k... surely doable? I'm sure a 190 expert could give the details... the flywheel + clutch are bound to be different.rmiddendorf wrote:Could you easily do a swap? Re: 190e 16v, Houston.
The swap is very do-able aside from finding the gearbox and the associated parts. No harder than it is on a BMW. Think the manual transmission is the same as it is on an E30 M3.rmiddendorf wrote:Could you easily do a swap? Although I would imagine that finding the parts on the cheap could be difficult. My advice, however, and I own a 16 valve, is to steer clear. I love the 80s MBs but they are grossly overcomplicated compared to the same period BMWs. They are cool on one hand but a real pain in the a$$ to fix. Every one has a climate control based on vacuum like the E23. The engine management, CIS-E, is a hybrid mechanical and electronic system. I find it vastly more difficult to understand and troubleshoot than Motronic, and it offers no benefits over Motronic that I can see, other than the fact it can run in a back-up mechanical mode which is a good thing given how often it breaks. The door locks are also vacuum actuated, and the sunroof motor is in the trunk. You need to remove the cams and use shims to adjust the valves. That must have been the English influence on the head, but if you think it is nice and common-sensical like an M30 then think again. Finally, the rear suspension is neat on one hand, but it has five links. At this age, they are all shot and the hubs have to come off to replace them all. Not a terrible fun job -- mine required a four foot breaker bar with a friend bouncing on it, and then you have to replace all the arms and get it all back together. Neat to look at, but personally I don't really discern a handling advantage over the trailing arm set-up used by BMW. More complexity, in other words. People say that the newer Mercedes are not built like the old ones. You know what I say? Thank God. My wife's recent ('09) E class makes so much more sense to me, in terms of how it is built and how it is serviced. And it has never broken, not once, nothing, not even a teething issue. Dead reliable like a Toyota.
If you are into 201s, that one has some red flags, particularly the cheesy wheels and the chrome trim below the beltline. 201s love to rust there to begin with and I can't imagine that trim helps. The 16 valves also had the factory self-level rear shocks. Why such a small car, with a small motor, would have such a system is beyond me but the shocks are horrifically expensive and given the modest power output of the motor if you want to actually get to triple digit speeds before your daughter is ready to start dating you should delete the shocks and the pump at the front of the head. I am ranting again, I will stop . . . .
The one on EAG is a really nice car but like all their cars you are paying a serious premium. (Although, if the different HVAC set up means you avoid all the God-forsaken vacuum actuated HVAC pods and the endless meters of vacuum hose, I'd readily fork over at least $5k more over a US version . . . .) An MBCA member in NY has a 70k mile US spec 16v for sale for less than $10k. It has had some minor paintwork on the doors, done properly, but it looks to be a very clean car. In my judgment, $22k is very high but then again that's me and after a certain price point in the mid teens or so I'd rather have a much newer car. Mid to high teens would be fair for that car, low 20s means someone really, really wants a Euro spec. I am curious about the horsepower figures too. Those are not the quoted figures on the Euro model. I don't want to say they are wrong because they could be dyno numbers perhaps but they are not the original figures on the Euro motor.
The 16 valve crowd is a bit of a cult, like the E30 M30 crowd, Rodney. Personally, I would stick with the E30 and find a good, late run 325iS. But sometimes I see a need to drill a hole in my head and that's why I do foolish things from time to time . . . . Don't make the same mistake I did.
(On second read, take the above with a few grains of salt. It's a harsh but still legitimate view. Not much sleep the last few nights and work has been non-stop so I am a bit grouchy . . . .)

Clean looking 1988 528e 5spd Gold
I tried to look at this car. Email the seller before pictures were posted on craigslist. I talked with him and he seemed to have a good knowledge of the vehicle. He emailed me back stating pictures were posted on craigslist and that was the last I heard from him. I tried emailing and calling him and he never returned any calls. Just FYI.

At car. This is how bad it was. The guy comes driving up looking at the car. I open the hood and sitting in the engine bay is a compression check tool!! Just sitting there in the engine bay. We drive the car is shaking all over the place. I tell him it's missing on one or more cylinders and he tries to tell me it's the dist! It's clear he knew why else would the compression tool be floating around in the engine compartment. Says the engine was rebuilt but no paperwork. The clear is coming off a many areas. A bit of rust, steering wheel is wasted. It's really about an 8k car.

Extra clean 528e (E28) 5 speed. All service records since new. Over $10000 spent recently, driveshaft, timing belt, brakes, tires, etc. A/C needs a charge and clearcoat peeling on the roof and trunk lid. Interior near perfect. Drives like new.

Known as the "Ferrari in Street Clothes" - this car is in fabulous shape and runs like a dream. New engine rebuilt 2 years ago and has 30K miles on it (I have all the records for the rebuild, over $8500).
The car has black exterior with tan interior and has multiple upgrades:
Dinan chip
Dinan stage 1 suspension
larger cam,
trunk mounted 6 CD changer. This car has been garaged and kept in fantastic condition with detailing twice a year.
Brand new tires.
All service records available.
Hate to sell my pride and joy but college tuition takes priority.
I am the 2nd owner. Serious inquiries only as a true BMW enthusiast will understand the value of this immaculate car.
Thanks for looking!
