Still cleaning from the ice storm damage at my house... Last night I dug up and raked over some turf in my yard near the street that got torn up by the yahoos picking up downed branches. In the middle of it I see something shiny laying next to the divot I just turned over; a 1935 Mercury-head dime. If I had dug up that same area and sifted through that dirt I probably wouldn't have found it, but it just popped out and landed face up on the dirt, like somebody reached down and put it there. To think it's probably been buried in that spot for several decades...

We have two decently-sized trees in our yard, and both lost about 2/3s of their canopy. They look like crap now, but we're hoping they'll come back. One is a 40+ year old ash, the other is a 60+ year old maple. Losing either one would be sad. The city has had private contractors going around picking up branches ever since; I think they are about done. They cut up a big divot in my front yard during the storm, which we had cleaned up soon after, but a smaller branch fell over the weekend, and one of the cleanup crews came through yesterday and felt they needed to use a skid loader to drag it off my yard. Genius. Next time I'll drag it to the back yard and cut it up for firewood.
Here's what the front yard looked like on April 9, the first night of the storm. Crappy cell phone pic in low light. It was eerie sleeping in our house that night; no power, no heat, wind blowing like crazy, with the sound of branches breaking and crashing to the ground all around.
A branch from our maple tree speared my shed; went through 5/8" plywood on top and 3/8" on the underside.
We boarded a plane on April 9 to leave Sioux Falls to go to San Diego (for my son's USMC Boot Camp graduation), but sat outside the terminal deicing for 7 hours and never left. Rebooked and left the next morning, before the second round of the ice storm. The storm knocked out power to our neighborhood on the 9th, and it wasn't restored until the 13th. My little brother & a brother-in-law saved our bacon during the storm; we had just bought a quarter of beef and had it in the freezer in our house. They went over, boxed up the contents of the freezer then hauled it and the freezer to my brother's house, and set it up in his garage to keep it all cold. They earned a few steaks for that deed.
I simply MUST find a new groundskeeper this season.
I like the yard done on Thursdays. Sometimes this clown doesn't show up until Sunday afternoon, if he shows up to do work at all.
He never listens. Is rude, arrogant, and grumpy. Foul mouthed, and at his best, disheveled. I believe he drinks on the job too, for I've found numerous beer cans squirelled away in the garage when he does do the mowing. I simply must find someone new 'cause I'm tired of it. And getting grumpier.

I thought you were the grounds keeper. Sure sounds like you.oldskool wrote:I simply MUST find a new groundskeeper this season.

No way. Oldskool was raised better than that. He obviously hired some hobo for cheap, he is just getting what he paid for. And I simply don't feel a bit sorry for the chap. Cheerio, pip, pip, then.OcCoupe wrote:I thought you were the grounds keeper. Sure sounds like you.oldskool wrote:I simply MUST find a new groundskeeper this season.

The W123 left me stranded today. I changed the oil like 3 weeks ago and took a good look at the radiator, it was getting to the point were I could see pitting on the plastic tanks. I filed that information away in the back burner section of my mind. I'm kind of mad, I really do know better, I swear. The upper radiator neck broke in the classic spot, right where I knew I should have epoxied a reinforcement years ago.
Fuggin new cars, I only got 30 years out of that radiator...
Oh well, tomorrow isn't a critical day at work, and I've got a new one coming by noon. Tow insurance got it home and a new radiator is 200 bucks, can't complain there. Hell, I've probably spent that in bourbon since I've been driving it

Tick bites leading to meat allergies. This would suck.

That's a seriously good reason to slather on the bug-spray.

If it doesn't have W.Germany printed on it, how do you know the part ever worked?Xenocide wrote:The W123 left me stranded today. Holy shit it's hot out there! I just finished bolting up my shitty exhaust on the e28 this morning in case I needed a parts running car, ended up not needing it. I picked up the radiator in wifey's civic before she had to leave for work and had it installed, filled, bled, and test driven in an hour or so. That was enough fun in the sun for me, time for a colebeer...

It started out life as a Dodge Colt; if it had been left in its natural state (ie: rusted as all get-out) people would steer clear out of pure fear.Mike W. wrote:Too much rubber, I want bare steel so people know to stay away. Ya know, I thought I saw Colt Hatchback in at least the taillights. I had one of them, the twin stick 8 speed. Peppy little car for a 1400CC machine, but ran out of breath about 85. I'd go 1 low, 2 low, 2 high, then push both forward together for 3 low. At 3 high and either 4th the only difference was revs. Not a bad little car for what it was and I never saw any rust on mine.
I think you're location challenged Dave.

Not long after my wife & I were married (1986) I thought we needed a new car, and checked out a Dodge Colt Vista Wagon.
Nice enough car and all... I must've stopped at the dealer at an awkward time, because there was only one sales guy around, and he was with another customer, so he told me to take it for a test drive alone. I gave it a decent run, then on my way back to the dealer some chick blew through a yield sign and T-boned me at an intersection. Totally the other driver's fault; knocked me onto the sidewalk on the opposite side of the street, and totally buckled the rear quarter of the. It had 16 miles on it.
It was pretty awkward calling the salesguy to tell him what happened. He didn't give me a card or anything, so I had to look the dealer's number up in the phone book then ask the receptionist who I should talk to. He hightailed it over and gave me a ride back (still trying to sell me a car) but I'm pretty sure he was in hot water over that whole deal. Never heard from him again.
